Complete thickness, width, length, and flatness tolerances for all sheet metals used in India — MS (IS 513), GI (IS 277), Stainless Steel (IS 6528), and Aluminium (IS 737). Includes a Tolerance Range Calculator and practical procurement guide for Indian fabricators and engineers.
Why nominal thickness ≠ actual thickness — and why this matters for every Indian fabrication project
Key Fact: When you order "2 mm MS sheet" in India, you will NOT receive exactly 2.000 mm. As per IS 513, the actual thickness can be anywhere from 1.87 mm to 2.13 mm (±0.13 mm tolerance). Understanding this prevents design errors, procurement disputes, and weld fit-up problems.
Nominal thickness is the ordered/specified size (e.g. "2 mm"). Actual thickness is what the mill delivers — always within a tolerance band above and below nominal. IS standards define the maximum allowable deviation. For structural design, always use nominal minus the under-tolerance as the minimum guaranteed thickness.
A 2 mm MS sheet at maximum under-tolerance (1.87 mm) weighs 6.5% less than nominal. At maximum over-tolerance (2.13 mm) it weighs 6.5% more. For large orders (50+ tonnes), this weight variation can equal several tonnes of steel — directly affecting cost, freight, and design load assumptions.
Structural engineers in India use design thickness = nominal minus under-tolerance for critical calculations. If a design requires minimum 1.6 mm, you must order at least 2 mm nominal (IS 513 under-tol = –0.13 mm) — not 1.6 mm nominal — to guarantee the minimum is always met after mill tolerance.
IS tolerances define what mills are allowed to supply. SAIL and TATA typically produce within tighter actual tolerances than IS permits. Import material (China, Korea) may run at the edges of tolerance or even slightly outside. Always inspect incoming material with a calibrated digital micrometer or caliper for critical applications.
Most IS sheet tolerances are asymmetric — greater allowance on the minus (under) side than the plus (over) side. For example, IS 513 for 2 mm sheet: +0.20/–0.13 mm. This means mills are more likely to deliver slightly under nominal than over. Design calculations should account for the minus tolerance as the worst case.
For non-structural applications (cladding, enclosures, ventilation), nominal thickness with standard IS tolerance is fully acceptable. For structural, pressure vessel, or fatigue-loaded applications, specify a restricted tolerance class (Class A under IS 513) or request a mill test certificate (MTC) confirming actual measured thickness of each coil/plate.

Common Sheet Widths in India |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 600 mm | +3 mm | 0 mm | +1 mm | 0 mm | Strip, narrow coil |
| 600 – 1200 mm | +5 mm | 0 mm | +2 mm | 0 mm | Standard 1000 mm, 1219 mm |
| 1200 – 1500 mm | +6 mm | 0 mm | +2 mm | 0 mm | Standard 1250 mm, 1500 mm |

| Over 1800 mm | +8 mm | 0 mm | +4 mm | 0 mm | Wide coil > 1800 mm |
* Width tolerance per IS 513. Note: Width is always +/0 — never under nominal. A "1250 mm wide" mill-edge sheet is always ≥1250 mm and may be up to 1256 mm. This is important for edge trimming allowance in Indian fabrication shops.

Common Sheet Lengths in India |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 1000 mm | +6 / 0 | +5 / 0 | +4 / 0 | Short cut sheets |
| 1000 – 2000 mm | +7 / 0 | +6 / 0 | +5 / 0 | 2438 mm (8 ft) – most common |
| 2000 – 3000 mm | +8 / 0 | +7 / 0 | +6 / 0 | 2440 mm, 3000 mm sheets |
| 3000 – 4000 mm | +10 / 0 | +9 / 0 | +8 / 0 | 3048 mm (10 ft), 4000 mm |
| Over 4000 mm | +12 / 0 | +11 / 0 | +10 / 0 | Long cut plates > 4 m |
* Cut length tolerance is always +/0 — sheets are never shorter than the ordered length, only longer by the permitted amount. For India's most common sheet sizes: 2438×1219 mm (8×4 ft), the +7/0 tolerance on length means actual length can be 2438–2445 mm. Budget 5–7 mm trim allowance per cut end in layout planning.
| Metal | Standard | Flatness (max bow per metre) | Camber (max per 2 m) | Practical Impact in India |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS CR Sheet | IS 513 | 8 mm / m | 6 mm per 2 m | Coil set common — needs flattening before laser/press |
| MS HR Plate | IS 2062 / IS 1730 | 10 mm / m | 8 mm per 2 m | HR plate may have more bow — specify "levelled" for precision work |
| GI Sheet | IS 277 | 8 mm / m | 6 mm per 2 m | GI roofing sheets — some bow acceptable for overlap installation |
| SS Sheet 2B | IS 6528 | 6 mm / m | 4 mm per 2 m | SS 2B is well-flattened — tighter than MS in practice |
| Aluminium Sheet | IS 737 | 5 mm / m | 4 mm per 2 m | Al annealed sheet may have slight wave — H14/H24 temper is flatter |
* Flatness tolerance is max allowable bow over any 1 metre length. For laser cutting and CNC press brake work in India, material flatness beyond 3–4 mm/m causes cutting focus issues and bend angle errors. Specify "levelled and cut-to-length" for critical fabrication — adds ₹3–8/kg but saves rework.

Note: 0.50 mm base GI and 0.47 mm base GI are both commonly sold as "Gauge 26 GI" in India — always verify actual base thickness with supplier MTC.
When to specify standard vs restricted tolerance — and how to write purchase orders correctly
Real-world guidance for dealing with sheet metal thickness variation in Indian shop floors and projects
For jobs where fit-up accuracy matters (press tooling, welded vessels, precision enclosures), measure actual sheet thickness with a digital caliper before marking and cutting. If actual thickness is 1.87 mm on a "2 mm" sheet, your bend allowances and weld gap calculations may be off. Measure first — adapt your CAM or marking accordingly.
Never order "2 mm MS sheet." Use the full specification: "MS CR Sheet, IS 513 Grade D, 2.00 mm thick, 1250×2500 mm, IS 2062 E250 grade, Normal Tolerance Class, SAIL/TATA primary, with MTC." This prevents supply of secondary material, wrong grade, or non-IS material — the three most common procurement problems at Indian steel stockists.
If structural calculations require a minimum of 5 mm plate, always order 6 mm nominal — not 5 mm. With IS 2062 under-tolerance of –0.35 mm, a "5 mm" plate can legally be 4.65 mm. A "6 mm" plate minimum is 5.65 mm — well above your 5 mm structural requirement. This applies to all metals, not just steel.
Indian steel stockists invoice by theoretical weight (nominal thickness × 7.85 g/cm³ × area). You pay for nominal 2.0 mm regardless of whether the actual sheet is 1.87 mm or 2.13 mm. This means if supply is consistently at under-tolerance, you are paying full price for thinner material than nominal — check MTC thickness data.
CR sheet from coil in India often arrives with coil set (bow along the rolling direction). IS 513 allows up to 8 mm flatness deviation per metre — enough to cause fit-up and laser cutting focus issues. For CNC laser, waterjet, or turret punch operations, specify "cut-to-length levelled sheets" rather than cutting from coil — adds ₹3–6/kg but prevents significant rework.
Imported MS and SS sheet (China, Korea, Japan) is often priced ₹5–15/kg cheaper than SAIL/TATA primary in India, but may run at the maximum under-tolerance allowed by IS. For structural applications, specify "SAIL/TATA primary IS-marked material with MTC" on your PO. For non-critical enclosures and cladding, import material at standard IS tolerance is generally acceptable.
