Double ISMC channels are commonly used in India for purlins, crane rails, and box girders. Weight simply doubles. Back-to-back (flanges out) or toe-to-toe (flanges facing) configurations.

How to manually calculate ISMC channel weight per metre and total weight with step-by-step examples
Section: ISMC 200 → 16.60 kg/m
Length per piece: 6 m
Quantity: 20 nos
Total = 16.60 × 6 × 20 = 1,992 kg
In tonnes: 1,992 ÷ 1000 = 1.992 MT
Section: 2× ISMC 250 → 22.20 × 2 = 44.40 kg/m
Span: 9 m per pair
Quantity: 12 pairs
Total = 44.40 × 9 × 12 = 4,795.2 kg
In tonnes = 4.795 MT
Section: ISMC 300 → 27.60 kg/m
Length: 10 m per piece
Qty: 8 nos | Rate: ₹62/kg
Weight = 27.60 × 10 × 8 = 2,208 kg
Cost = 2,208 × 62 = ₹1,36,896
ISMC 150 → Area = 13.28 cm²
kg/m = 13.28 × 0.785 = 10.42 kg/m ✔
This confirms: any ISMC weight can be derived from its cross-sectional area × 0.785 — consistent with IS 808 published values.
ISMC and related channel sections commonly specified in Indian structural steel projects
Common uses of ISMC channels in Indian construction, fabrication, and infrastructure projects
ISMC 150, 200, and 250 are the most widely used purlin sections in Indian industrial sheds and warehouses. They span between rafters to support roofing sheets. Double ISMC purlins are used for longer spans (8–12 m) and heavy GI or PPGI roof loads.
ISMC 300 and ISMC 400 — especially as double back-to-back sections — are used as underslung crane runway beams in Indian manufacturing plants, shipyards, and heavy engineering workshops. They support overhead crane rails and must be designed for fatigue loading per IS 807.
Pairs of ISMC sections placed back-to-back or toe-to-toe, connected with lacing or batten plates, form built-up columns used extensively in Indian transmission towers, portal frame columns, and industrial shed stanchions where single-section columns are insufficient.
ISMC 75 to ISMC 150 form the side rails of fabricated cable trays and ladder-type cable racks in Indian power plants, refineries, and large industrial facilities. GI-treated or hot-dip galvanized ISMC is specified for outdoor or corrosive environments.
ISMC 100 to ISMC 150 are commonly used as lintel beams over doors and windows in Indian masonry construction. They are embedded into the brickwork to carry the wall load above openings. ISMC 150 (10.42 kg/m) is the standard lintel section in most Indian civil projects.
ISMC 75 to ISMC 125 form the structural frames for MCC panels, distribution boards, and electrical switchgear enclosures in Indian electrical infrastructure. Their C-profile allows easy bolt access from one side — a major advantage over hollow sections for panel assembly.
Practical advice for structural engineers, fabricators, and procurement teams ordering ISMC in India
ISMC channels are produced by SAIL (Durgapur, Bhilai) in standard mill lengths of 10 m, 11 m, and 12 m. Stockists may cut to 6 m for local delivery. Plan your purlin and girt spacing to standard lengths — minimising cuts reduces wastage and cost significantly on large shed projects.
All ISMC channels for structural use in India must conform to IS 2062 Grade E250 (Fe 410) — yield strength 250 MPa minimum. Request a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) from the supplier confirming the grade. Avoid re-rolled or secondary channels from unverified sources for any structural application.
For purlin spans under 6–7 m with light roofing, cold-formed lipped channels (IS 811) are lighter and cheaper than ISMC. For spans over 8 m or heavy GI roofing, ISMC is the correct choice due to its higher section modulus and web thickness. Never substitute cold-formed channels for ISMC in structural designs without engineering verification.
ISMC from Indian mills arrives with mill scale which traps moisture at the flange-to-web junction — a common corrosion failure point in Indian roofing structures. Always shot blast to Sa 2.5 and prime with zinc phosphate before fabrication and painting. Unpainted ISMC purlins in a coastal Indian environment corrode through the flange in 3–5 years.
When calculating total ISMC requirements for a project, add 5% wastage allowance for end cuts and offcuts. For projects with many short pieces (lintels, framing), add 8–10%. Always better to have 2–3 spare pieces than to reorder at spot prices mid-project when your fabrication schedule is running.
Measure web depth and flange width with a steel tape at goods receipt — a ISMC 200 must be exactly 200 mm deep with 75 mm flange. Under-height channels are supplied by some secondary market dealers. Additionally, weigh a batch of 10 pieces and compare to the calculated weight — a 3–5% weight shortfall indicates under-rolled or wrong-grade material.
