Metal Weight Formulas by Shape

Exact formulas used in this calculator — all in practical units (mm dimensions, g/cm³ density = kg result)

Flat Sheet / Plate
Wt (kg) = T(mm) × W(mm)/1000 × L(mm)/1000 × D
T = thickness, W = width, L = length, D = density (g/cm³). Same as T × W(m) × L(m) × D.
Round Bar (Solid)
Wt/m = (π/4) × (D/1000)² × 1000 × Density
= 0.000617 × D² (for MS)
D = diameter in mm. Shortcut: D² × 0.000617 kg/m for mild steel. For SS: D² × 0.000623. For Al: D² × 0.000212.
Square Bar
Wt/m = (A/1000)² × 1000 × Density
= 0.000785 × A² (for MS)
A = side in mm. Shortcut: A² × 0.000785 kg/m for MS. Simply: (A mm)² × density / 1,000,000 × 1000.
Flat Bar
Wt/m = T(mm) × W(mm) × Density / 1000
T = thickness, W = width. For MS 6×50mm flat bar: 6×50×7.85/1000 = 2.355 kg/m.
Hex Bar
Wt/m = 2.598 × (A/1000)² × Density × 1000
= A² × 0.00068 (MS)
A = across-flats dimension in mm. Area of hexagon = (3√3/2) × s² where s = A/2, = 2.598 × (A/2)² = 0.6495 × A².
Round Pipe / Tube
Wt/m = (π/4) × (OD²−ID²) / 10⁶ × Density × 1000
= 0.0246615 × (OD²−ID²) × D/7850 kg/m
OD = outer diameter, ID = inner diameter = OD − 2×WT (wall thickness). All in mm.
RHS / SHS (Hollow)
Wt/m = [(H×W) − (H−2t)×(W−2t)] / 10⁶ × Density × 1000
H = height, W = width, t = wall thickness (all mm). For SHS: H=W. Corner radii ignored in this simplified formula.
Equal Angle (ISA)
Wt/m = (2A − t) × t / 10⁶ × Density × 1000
A = leg size, t = thickness (mm). Simplified formula (ignores root fillet radius). For accurate IS weights use the IS:808 section table.
Unequal Angle
Wt/m = (A + B − t) × t / 10⁶ × Density × 1000
A = long leg, B = short leg, t = thickness (mm). As per IS:808 simplified method.
ISMC Channel
Wt/m = [H×W − (H−2Tf)×(W−Tw)] / 10⁶ × Density × 1000
H = height, W = flange width, Tf = flange thickness, Tw = web thickness. Simplified (ignores fillets). For exact: use IS:808 table.
I-Beam / ISMB
Wt/m = [2×Bf×Tf + (H−2Tf)×Tw] / 10⁶ × D × 1000
H = total height, Bf = flange width, Tf = flange thickness, Tw = web thickness. Simplified; use IS:808 for precision design.
Checker / Tread Plate
Wt/m² = (T_base + T_pattern_allowance) × Density
≈ (T + 0.5 to 1.0) mm × D
Standard industry allowance: add 0.5–1.0 kg/m² over plain sheet weight for the raised pattern. This calculator adds 0.8 kg/m² as a standard allowance.

Pro Tips for Metal Weight Calculation

Practical guidance for Indian fabricators, structural engineers and procurement teams

Use Correct Density — Not Always 7.85

Many calculators default to 7.85 g/cm³ for all metals. SS 304 is 7.93, SS 316 is 7.98, aluminium is 2.70, copper is 8.96. On a 10MT SS 316 order, using 7.85 instead of 7.98 creates a 165 kg under-calculation — a significant billing discrepancy. Always select the correct grade material card in this calculator to auto-fill the right density.

IS 808 Section Weights Are More Accurate

For ISMB beams, ISMC channels, ISLB, ISJB, and ISA angles, the formulas in this calculator are simplified approximations. For structural design and procurement, always use the tabulated unit weights from IS:808:1989 (Dimensions for Hot Rolled Steel Beams, Columns, Channels and Angle Sections). IS:808 weights include fillet radii and taper, giving true section weight accurate to ±0.5%.

Use the Multi-Item List for BOQ

For project Bill of Quantities (BOQ), use the Add to List button to accumulate all items. The list shows each item's weight and auto-totals in kg and MT. Use Print to generate a hard-copy weight schedule or Copy to paste into Excel for your project estimation sheet. This avoids manual re-calculation errors common when totalling multiple section types.

Account for Standard Mill Lengths

Indian steel sections are supplied in standard mill lengths — MS bars and angles in 6m or 12m, pipes in 6m or 5.8m, RHS/SHS in 6m, plates in 2500mm, 5000mm, 6000mm. When calculating project weight, round up your required length to the next full mill length — fractional metres cannot be ordered from most Indian stockists without a cut charge and minimum order premium.

Verify Pipe Weight by OD × WT

Indian pipe suppliers list pipe in Nominal Bore (NB) sizes — e.g. 50 NB, 80 NB — but the actual OD differs from NB. Always get the OD and wall thickness from the supplier's catalogue (IS:1239, IS:3589, or IS:9890) before calculating. For example, 50 NB heavy class = OD 60.3mm, WT 3.65mm. Using nominal bore as OD will give wrong weight. Use our pipe calculator with actual OD + WT values.

Shortcut Formulas for Field Use

Useful on-site shortcuts for MS (7.85 g/cm³):
Round bar: D² × 0.000617 kg/m
Square bar: A² × 0.000785 kg/m
Flat bar: T×W × 0.00785 kg/m
Sheet: T(mm) × 7.85 = kg/m²
Hex bar: A² × 0.00068 kg/m
Memorise these for quick site estimates — use the calculator for final BOQ values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about metal weight calculation by shape in India

What is the formula for calculating metal weight for any shape?
The universal formula for any metal shape:

Weight (kg) = Volume (cm³) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1000

The key is calculating the cross-sectional area for each shape, then multiplying by length:
— Round bar: Area = π/4 × D² (cm²), then × length (cm) × density
— Square bar: Area = A² (cm²)
— Flat bar: Area = T × W (cm²)
— Pipe: Area = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) (cm²)
— Flat sheet: Weight/m² = T(mm) × Density (g/cm³) = kg/m²

In practical mm-units: Weight per metre (kg/m) = Cross-sectional Area (mm²) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000 × 1,000. This calculator handles all unit conversions automatically.
How do I calculate the weight of a round MS bar?
Formula: Weight/m = (π/4) × (D/1000)² × 7850 kg/m³
Simplified shortcut: D² × 0.000617 kg/m (for MS density 7.85 g/cm³)

Examples:
— 12mm dia MS rod: 12² × 0.000617 = 0.888 kg/m
— 20mm dia MS rod: 20² × 0.000617 = 0.247 kg/m → 0.247 × 12m bar = 2.96 kg per bar
— 25mm dia MS rod: 25² × 0.000617 = 0.385 kg/m → 0.385 × 6m = 2.31 kg per bar
— 50mm dia MS rod: 50² × 0.000617 = 1.543 kg/m

For SS 304 use 0.000623 | For aluminium use 0.000212 | For copper use 0.000703 | For brass use 0.000668.

How to calculate the weight of a hollow RHS or SHS section?
Formula:
Weight/m = [(H × W) − (H − 2t) × (W − 2t)] ÷ 1,000,000 × Density × 1000 kg/m

Where H = height (mm), W = width (mm), t = wall thickness (mm).

Examples (MS, 7.85 g/cm³):
— SHS 40×40×2mm: [(40×40) − (36×36)] ÷ 1,000,000 × 7850 = 2.39 kg/m
— SHS 50×50×3mm: [(50×50) − (44×44)] ÷ 1,000,000 × 7850 = 4.29 kg/m
— RHS 100×50×3mm: [(100×50) − (94×44)] ÷ 1,000,000 × 7850 = 6.71 kg/m
— RHS 150×75×4mm: [(150×75) − (142×67)] ÷ 1,000,000 × 7850 = 11.3 kg/m
— SHS 100×100×5mm: [(100×100) − (90×90)] ÷ 1,000,000 × 7850 = 14.9 kg/m
