Instantly calculate aluminium sheet weight in kg per sheet, kg/m² and tonnes. Supports IS 737:2024 alloy grades 1100, 5052, 6061, 7075 and more — enter dimensions in mm or feet. Updated with 2026 market prices and BIS compliance data.
2026 Update: This calculator is updated with IS 737:2024 (Fifth Revision) which adds 42 new alloy grades. BIS Quality Control Order (effective October 2025) mandates compulsory BIS certification for all aluminium sheet products sold in India. MCX aluminium rate in India as of May 2026 is approximately ₹320–340 per kg. Always request a valid BIS Standard Mark and Mill Test Certificate from your supplier.
Select your preferred unit system, enter sheet dimensions, choose alloy grade and get instant weight results. Supports IS 737:2024 alloy grades.
Follow these simple steps to calculate aluminium sheet weight accurately in seconds using the 2026 IS 737:2024 updated tool
Select Millimetres (mm) if you have metric dimensions from a datasheet, or Feet & Inches if your supplier quotes in feet — common in Indian markets and older IS standards.
Type in the sheet length and width. Standard Indian market sizes include 2440×1220 mm (8×4 ft), 2000×1000 mm, 2500×1250 mm and 3000×1500 mm.
Enter the sheet thickness in mm. Common sizes in India range from 0.5 mm to 12 mm as per IS 737:2024 (BIS). Plates above 12 mm need separate ordering from mills.
Enter the number of sheets. The calculator multiplies per-sheet weight by quantity to give you total procurement weight and total estimated material cost instantly.
Choose your alloy from the IS 737:2024 updated dropdown. Each grade has a different density — 7075 aircraft alloy is heavier than 5052 marine grade. Use Custom Density for non-listed alloys.
Enter the current market price in ₹/kg. MCX aluminium spot price in India (May 2026) is approximately ₹320–340/kg. The calculator will show estimated total material cost instantly.
Understand exactly how aluminium sheet weight in kg is calculated, with worked examples for standard Indian sheet sizes in 2026
Length and Width are in mm. Dividing their product by 1,000,000 (1000×1000) converts mm² to m². This gives the surface area of one sheet.
Multiplying thickness (mm) by density (g/cm³) directly gives kg/m². This works because 1 mm thickness × 1 g/cm³ density = 1 kg/m², making the conversion factor exactly 1.
When feet are entered, the calculator converts to mm first: 1 ft = 304.8 mm. So 8 ft = 2438.4 mm, 4 ft = 1219.2 mm — very close to the standard 2440×1220 mm sheet size used in Indian markets.
Standard 8×4 ft sheet (2440×1220 mm), 3 mm thick, 6061 alloy (2.70 g/cm³) @ ₹330/kg:
Area = 2440×1220÷1,000,000 = 2.977 m²
kg/m² = 3 × 2.70 = 8.10
Weight = 2.977 × 8.10 = ≈ 24.11 kg
Cost = 24.11 × 330 = ≈ ₹7,956

Key sectors and real-world uses where accurate aluminium sheet weight calculation is essential in 2026
Aluminium cladding, roofing, false ceilings and curtain walls are widely used across Indian cities. IS 737:2024 grade 6063 is now specifically recommended for architectural applications in India.
India's growing EV sector in 2026 uses aluminium sheets extensively for battery enclosures, bonnet panels and body panels. Grade 6061 T6 is the preferred alloy for EV battery tray fabrication under FAME-III incentives.
HAL, DRDO and private aerospace manufacturers under India's Atma Nirbhar Bharat programme require exact sheet weights for airframe design. HAL Nasik uses 2024 and 7075 grades for aircraft skin panels.
Fabricators across India's manufacturing hubs (Pune, Rajkot, Coimbatore, Faridabad) calculate aluminium sheet weight for procurement, freight cost estimation, and machine load planning on press brakes and shearing machines.
India's 2026 solar expansion uses aluminium sheet and extrusions for solar panel mounting structures and tracker frames. Grade 6061 T6 and 6063 T5 are standard for solar mounting in India's PM Surya Ghar scheme.
Aluminium is priced per kg in India (MCX LME base + local premium). With rates at ₹320–340/kg in May 2026, knowing the exact weight per sheet allows accurate material cost budgeting for any project or government tender.
Best practices used by fabricators, engineers and procurement teams across India in 2026
Grade 7075 is 4.8% denser than 5052. On a 100-sheet order this difference is significant. Since October 2025, all aluminium sheets must carry a BIS Standard Mark under the Quality Control Order 2025. Always request the IS 737:2024 mill test certificate from your supplier.
IS 737:2024 allows ±5–8% thickness tolerance depending on sheet width and alloy. For tight weight budgets, use the upper tolerance thickness in your calculation to avoid under-ordering. For precision aerospace work, request SPC-certified coils from Hindalco or NALCO.
Typical cut-to-size wastage in Indian fabrication shops is 8–12% for CNC plasma/laser cutting and 5–8% for guillotine shearing. Add this allowance to your total sheet requirement when placing purchase orders to avoid production shortfalls.
kg/m² is independent of sheet size — use it to compare supplier quotations directly. A sheet quoted at 2440×1220×3mm should be 8.10 kg/m² for 6061 alloy. If the supplier's figure differs by more than 2%, request the mill test certificate and verify alloy temper and density.
Anodising adds 5–20 microns and negligible weight (<0.01 kg/m²). PVDF coating adds approximately 0.02–0.05 kg/m². Protective PE film adds ~0.03 kg/m² but is removed on site. For most procurement purposes, coating weight can be ignored unless calculating precise freight tonnage for bulk orders.
Aluminium sheet attracts 18% GST in India in 2026. Freight charges on Indian railways and road transport are weight-based (typically ₹2–5 per kg within 500 km). Always calculate total landed cost = (weight × rate) + GST + freight when budgeting. See our MS Sheet Weight guide for steel equivalent reference.
Most Indian distributors (Hindalco, NALCO, Metal One, Ratnamani Metals) stock 2440×1220 mm (8×4 ft), 2000×1000 mm, and 2500×1250 mm. Ordering non-standard sizes attracts a cutting premium of ₹5–15/kg. The 3000×1500 mm size is available from major mills for large infrastructure projects.
Aluminium scrap (clean sheet offcuts) typically fetches ₹120–160/kg in India in 2026 — roughly 40–50% of the primary sheet price. Accurately tracking weight helps maximise scrap recovery revenue and offset material costs on large fabrication contracts.
