Enter bar length in metres (or selected unit). Standard Indian market lengths are 6 m and 12 m. Enter quantity for full order weight. All results update automatically as you type — no button press needed.
kg/m — compare with IS 1732 data sheet and supplier catalogue. kg per bar — for crane pick and per-piece cost calculation. Total kg & MT — for procurement and freight. Area & Circumference — for structural design checks.
Scroll to the IS 1732 reference table for pre-calculated standard round bar weights by diameter. Use the MS, SS 304 and Alloy Steel tabs to compare weights across materials at the same diameter. All values use IS 1732:1979 standard diameters.
Quick mental estimate: MS round bar kg/m = D² × 0.006165 where D is diameter in mm. Example: 25 mm bar = 25² × 0.006165 = 625 × 0.006165 = 3.85 kg/m. This formula is used by Indian steel traders daily for fast quotation.
Step-by-step calculation method used by Indian structural engineers and quantity surveyors
The constant 0.006165 comes from π/4 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 0.7854 × 7.85 ÷ 1000. This gives kg/m directly from D² in mm². Every Indian steel trader and fabricator knows: kg/m = D² × 0.006165. For SS 304: D² × 0.006229. For Aluminium: D² × 0.002120. For Copper: D² × 0.007037.
Area in mm² × length in mm = volume in mm³. Density is in g/cm³ = g per 1000 mm³. So mm³ ÷ 1000 = cm³, × density = grams, ÷ 1000 = kg. For kg/m: area mm² × 1000 (mm per metre) × density ÷ 1,000,000 = kg/m, which simplifies to area mm² × density ÷ 1000 = kg/m.
Area = 0.7854 × 32² = 0.7854 × 1024 = 804.25 mm²
kg/m = 804.25 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 6.31 kg/m
Per bar = 6.31 × 6 = 37.87 kg
Total = 37.87 × 100 = 3,787 kg = 3.787 MT
Quick check: 32² × 0.006165 = 1024 × 0.006165 = 6.31 ✓
Area = 0.7854 × 50² = 0.7854 × 2500 = 1963.5 mm²
kg/m = 1963.5 × 7.93 ÷ 1000 = 15.57 kg/m
Per bar = 15.57 × 3 = 46.71 kg
Total = 46.71 × 20 = 934.2 kg = 0.934 MT
Quick check: 50² × (7.93×0.7854÷1000) = 2500 × 0.006229 = 15.57 ✓

Key sectors using MS, SS, alloy steel and non-ferrous round bars across India
MS and alloy steel round bars (EN8, EN19, EN24) are machined into transmission shafts, drive axles, spindles and worm shafts for the Indian automotive, textile machinery and general engineering sectors. Sizes from 25 mm to 150 mm are most common.
Mild steel round bars are bent into stirrups, hoops and U-bolts and used as anchor bolts, anchor rods and base plate bolts in civil construction projects across India. IS 1732 bars are also used as connecting pins in structural steel connections per IS 800:2007.
SS 304 and SS 316 round bars are machined into agitator shafts, impellers, valve stems and conveyor shafts for the Indian food processing, dairy, pharmaceutical and chemical industries where corrosion resistance and hygiene compliance (FSSAI / GMP) are required.
MS, alloy steel and SS round bars are the primary raw material for cold-heading and hot-forging fasteners — hex bolts, anchor bolts, studs and threaded rods. Major Indian fastener clusters in Rajkot, Ludhiana and Pune consume thousands of tonnes of IS 1732 round bar annually.
Large diameter MS and alloy steel bars (50 mm to 200 mm) are the starting stock for hot forging crankshafts, connecting rods, flanges and press tool components. Bharat Forge (Pune) and Kalyani Steels are major Indian consumers of round bar forging stock.
Aluminium and brass round bars are CNC machined into fuel injection components, valve seats, bearing housings and electrical connectors for India's automotive supply chain (IATF 16949). EN8 and EN19 bars are the backbone of the Indian auto ancillary machining industry.
Best practices for Indian engineers, procurement teams and steel stockists
Every experienced Indian steel buyer knows: kg/m = D² × 0.006165 (D in mm). It is worth memorising for instant mental estimates during site visits and stockist negotiations. For quick approximation, use D² ÷ 162 (slightly less accurate but easier). Example: 50 mm bar ≈ 2500 ÷ 162 ≈ 15.4 kg/m vs exact 15.41 kg/m — close enough for budgeting.
IS 1732:1979 specifies diameter tolerances for hot rolled round bars: for diameters up to 25 mm the tolerance is ±0.4 mm; for 25–50 mm it is ±0.5 mm; for 50–80 mm it is ±0.6 mm. This means a nominal 25 mm bar can be 24.6–25.4 mm, causing up to ±3.2% variation in cross-section area and weight. For precision machining stock, always specify cold drawn (CD) bars which have tighter tolerances of ±0.1 mm.
When ordering round bar for machined shafts or turned components, always add the machining stock to the finished diameter before calculating purchase weight. Standard allowance: +3 to 5 mm on diameter for rough turning + finishing. For a finished Ø50 mm shaft, order Ø56 mm bar (adds ~25% to weight and cost). Never order bar at finished size — always allow for turning stock and facing cuts.
Approximate ex-Mumbai/Delhi 2026: IS 1732 MS round bar ₹60,000–₹70,000/MT; EN8/C45 bars ₹75,000–₹90,000/MT; EN19/42CrMo ₹95,000–₹1,10,000/MT; SS 304 round bar ₹2,10,000–₹2,40,000/MT; SS 316 bars ₹3,00,000–₹3,40,000/MT; Aluminium 6061 bars ₹2,50,000–₹2,80,000/MT. Prices change monthly — always confirm with stockist. SAIL, JSPL, Tata Steel and Mukand are primary Indian producers.
Hot Rolled (HR) bars: rough surface, wide diameter tolerance, lowest cost — use for structural, forging and fabrication. Cold Drawn (CD) bars: smooth, tight tolerance (±0.1 mm), slightly higher strength than HR — use for precision machined parts without rough turning. Bright Bars: centreless ground to very tight tolerance (±0.05 mm) and h9/h11 surface finish — use for linear shafts, hydraulic components and precision fits in Indian machine tools.
For automotive (IATF 16949), defence, pressure vessel and structural applications per IS 800:2007, always demand the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) from your bar supplier. The MTC confirms actual diameter, weight per metre, yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), percentage elongation and chemical composition — all mandatory for BIS-certified IS 1732 and IS 2062 supply chains in India.
