Profile Allowance is critical for accurate ordering: The effective cover width is always less than the flat coil width used to make the sheet. A corrugated sheet with a 1000mm flat width covers only 940mm of roof. If you calculate material using flat width instead of effective cover width, you will be 6–10% short on area coverage. Always order sheets based on effective cover width, not coil/flat width.

Recommendation for India: For industrial and commercial roofing beyond 20 years lifespan, specify PPGL AZ100 or AZ150 — the aluminium-zinc alloy coating gives significantly better corrosion life per rupee. For residential economy roofing (10–15 year expectation), PPGI Z180 is the most cost-effective choice widely available across Indian distributors. Within 5 km of the sea — always upgrade to PPGL AZ150 minimum.

India Market Reality: Most PPGI sold through building material dealers in India is standard polyester (PE) 20–25 µm DFT. When buying from distributors rather than direct from mills (JSW, TATA, NIPPON), always request the mill test certificate (MTC) which confirms actual DFT, coating weight, and zinc/aluzinc class. Substandard sheets with thinner paint (12–15 µm) and lighter zinc coating (Z60 or less) are common in the grey market — these fail within 3–5 years in Indian conditions.

Base Metal & Zinc Coating

Confirm Base Metal Thickness (BMT)

Ask for BMT (Base Metal Thickness) — not TCT (Total Coated Thickness). The zinc/paint coat adds 0.05–0.15mm on top of BMT. A sheet sold as "0.50mm" may have only 0.40mm base metal if TCT is quoted.

Min. BMT per use: Residential 0.40mm | Commercial 0.47mm | Industrial 0.55mm+
Specify Zinc Coating Class (g/m²)

Verify the zinc coating class on the Mill Test Certificate. Z180 (180 g/m² both sides total) is the recommended minimum for Indian residential use. Z275 for coastal and industrial.

Inland: Z180 min | Coastal (>5km): Z275 | <5km coast: PPGL AZ150
PPGI or PPGL — Right choice for location?

PPGL (Galvalume / Aluzinc) has 2–4× better corrosion resistance than PPGI in flat areas. Mandatory for coastal locations. PPGI is more forgiving at cut edges due to sacrificial zinc.

Coastal India: PPGL AZ100 min | Marine: PPGL AZ150 | Inland budget: PPGI Z180
Request Mill Test Certificate (MTC)

Every legitimate coil from JSW, TATA, NIPPON, BHUSHAN will have an MTC showing heat/coil number, BMT, zinc coating weight, yield strength, and paint DFT. Never accept a batch without MTC.

Check: Coil No. | BMT | Zinc g/m² | YS (MPa) | Paint DFT (µm)
Check Steel Grade / Yield Strength

Roofing sheets should be minimum G300 (300 MPa yield) or G350 for spans above 1.5m. G550 is available for thinner long-span profiles. Verify on MTC — not salesperson's claim.

Standard spans: G300 | Long span >1.5m: G350–G550 | CGCC / TDC51D+Z grade

Paint System & DFT

Specify Paint Type (PE / SMP / HDP / PVDF)

Standard polyester (PE) 20–25 µm is fine for ≤10 year expectation. For 15–25 year life, specify SMP or HDP. For 25+ years or coastal — specify PVDF. Ask for the resin type in writing.

Economy: PE 20µm | Commercial: SMP 25µm | Premium: PVDF 25–30µm
Verify Top Coat DFT (Dry Film Thickness)

Substandard PPGI in India is often 12–15 µm instead of the specified 20–25 µm. DFT can be verified with an inexpensive magnetic DFT gauge on delivery. Reject if below spec.

IS 14246 minimum: 15 µm top coat | Specify: 20–25 µm minimum
Check Back Coat Specification

The underside (back coat) protects against condensation corrosion inside the building. Minimum 7 µm polyester back coat. Buildings with aggressive interiors (fertiliser plants, food processing) need 12–15 µm back coat or epoxy.

Standard: 7–9 µm PE back coat | Aggressive interior: 12–15 µm epoxy back coat
Confirm RAL / Colour Code in Purchase Order

Indian PPGI is commonly sold in RAL 3009 (oxide red), RAL 6005 (green), RAL 5013 (dark blue), RAL 9002 (grey-white). Colour fading varies by pigment — ask for chalking rating (should be ≤ Rating 2 after 5 years per ISO 4628-6).

Specify RAL code in PO | Darker colours fade faster in Indian UV conditions

Dimensions, Profile & Coverage

Order by Effective Cover Width — Not Flat Width

Corrugated 1000mm flat sheet covers only ~940mm of roof. If you calculate area using flat width, you will be 6% short. Always use effective cover width for area calculations and quantity ordering.

Corrugated 1000mm flat → 940mm cover | Trapezoidal: see profile card
Specify Exact Cut Length + Tolerance

Standard mill tolerance on cut length is ±25mm. For buildings requiring close fit (e.g., below fascia level) specify ±10mm and confirm the supplier can achieve this on their guillotine/flying shear.

Standard: ±25mm | Tight fit: specify ±10mm in PO
Confirm Purlin Spacing vs Sheet Span Rating

Sheet span capacity depends on BMT, profile depth, and steel grade. A 0.47mm corrugated sheet is rated for max 1200mm purlin spacing. At 1800mm spacing, you need 0.55–0.60mm or a deeper trapezoidal profile.

0.40–0.45mm corrugated: max 1000mm purlin | 0.55mm trap: up to 1800mm
Add Wastage Allowance to Quantity

Hip and valley cuts, openings for skylights, vents and AC units all waste material. Add 5% wastage for simple shed roofs, 8–12% for complex residential roofs with multiple hips, ridges and penetrations.

Simple shed: +5% | Residential gable: +7% | Complex hip roof: +10–12%
Check End Lap & Side Lap Requirements

End lap (head lap) should be minimum 150mm for slopes above 15°, and 200mm for slopes 5–15°. Side lap should be minimum 1 full corrugation for corrugated sheets. Confirm with structural engineer for your roof pitch.

End lap: 150mm (slope >15°) | 200mm (slope 5–15°) | Side: 1 rib min

Standards, Compliance & Supply

Verify IS 14246 / BIS Mark Compliance

IS 14246:2005 is the Indian standard for prepainted metal coated steel sheets. BIS certification (IS mark) on PPGI/PPGL is not yet mandatory across all grades in India, but major projects (CPWD, PSU, NBCC) require it. Verify the IS mark on the bundle tag and MTC.

IS 14246:2005 | Also: JIS G3312 (Japan) | ASTM A755 (USA) | EN 10169 (EU)
Check Mill Brand — Not Trader's Claim

In India, first-choice PPGI/PPGL mills are JSW Steel, TATA BlueScope, NIPPON Steel India, BHUSHAN Steel. Re-roller and secondary material looks identical but has inconsistent coating. Verify mill brand on coil tag / MTC — not just the distributor's invoice.

Tier 1 India: JSW | TATA BlueScope | NIPPON | BHUSHAN | ESSAR
Inspect Bundle Tag Before Unloading

Each bundle should have a label showing: Mill name, coil number, BMT, zinc coating class, paint type, colour RAL code, width, length and weight. If the label is missing or hand-written, do not accept the material without verification.

Check: Coil No. | BMT mm | Zinc class | Paint | RAL | Width | Length | Weight
Weigh a Sample Bundle on Delivery

A quick spot check — weigh one bundle and cross-check against calculated weight (BMT × area × density). If actual weight is more than 5% below calculated, the BMT or coating may be undersized. Reject or dispute before unloading full delivery.

Use this page's calculator to check expected bundle weight vs. actual weight
Check for Paintfilm Holidays & Edge Burr

Inspect cut edges for excessive burr (sharp metal edges that tear workers' hands and allow early corrosion). Check painted surface for paint holidays (bare spots), pinholes and fish-scale defects. Reject sheets with more than 3 holidays per m².

Acceptable: ≤3 holidays/m² | Edge burr: clean cut only | No delamination
Get Warranty in Writing

Major mill brands (TATA BlueScope, JSW) offer 10–25 year written warranties on PPGL products for India. Distributor verbal warranties mean nothing — get the manufacturer's warranty document before project acceptance. Confirm what the warranty covers (perforation only vs. colour fade vs. delamination).

JSW Colour Coat: up to 15 yr | TATA Zincalume: 10–25 yr structural | Get in writing

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about PPGI / PPGL roofing sheet weight, specification and buying in India

How do I calculate the weight of one PPGI corrugated sheet?
Use this formula:

Weight per sheet (kg) = BMT (mm) × Profile Factor × Effective Cover Width (m) × Length (m) × Density (7.85 kg/dm³) + Coating allowance

Step by step for a typical 0.47mm BMT corrugated sheet, 1000mm cover width, 3000mm long:
1. Flat sheet factor for corrugated profile: 1.10 (10% more metal in profile vs flat area)
2. Weight = 0.47 × 1.10 × 1.00 × 3.00 × 7.85 = 12.21 kg
3. Add zinc coat allowance (Z180 = ~0.18 kg/m², flat area = 1.0 × 3.0 = 3m²): +0.54 kg
4. Add paint coat allowance (~0.05 kg/m²): +0.15 kg
5. Total: ≈ 12.90 kg per sheet

Or use this page's calculator above — it does this automatically with correct profile factors.
How many PPGI sheets are in 1 MT (1 tonne)?
The number of sheets per MT depends on BMT, profile, and length. Approximate guide for corrugated PPGI at Z180:

— 0.40mm BMT × 3m length × 1m cover: ~10.5 kg/sheet → ~95 sheets/MT
— 0.47mm BMT × 3m length × 1m cover: ~12.9 kg/sheet → ~77 sheets/MT
— 0.50mm BMT × 3m length × 1m cover: ~13.5 kg/sheet → ~74 sheets/MT
— 0.55mm BMT × 3m length × 1m cover: ~14.9 kg/sheet → ~67 sheets/MT
— 0.60mm BMT × 3m length × 1m cover: ~16.3 kg/sheet → ~61 sheets/MT

For 6m long sheets, halve the sheets-per-MT count.
For trapezoidal profiles (deeper rib), sheets per MT will be fewer (more metal per m² effective cover).
What is the difference between BMT and TCT in PPGI sheets?
This is one of the most common sources of confusion and dispute when buying PPGI/PPGL sheets in India:

BMT — Base Metal Thickness:
The actual thickness of the steel base metal only — measured before any coating is applied. BMT is what determines structural strength, spanning ability, and load-bearing capacity. This is what you should specify.

TCT — Total Coated Thickness:
BMT + zinc or aluzinc coating + primer + top coat + back coat. A 0.47mm BMT sheet with Z180 zinc and 20+9µm paint system will have a TCT of approximately 0.47 + 0.046 + 0.029 = ~0.55mm TCT.

The problem: Unscrupulous dealers in India quote TCT as the "thickness" — so a sheet sold as "0.50mm" may have only 0.40–0.42mm BMT. At ₹70,000/MT, this is a significant underdelivery. Always:
— Specify BMT clearly in purchase order
— Ask for MTC showing BMT measurement
— Use a calibrated micrometer to spot-check at the cut edge (where coating is absent and pure base metal is exposed)
What PPGI sheet thickness is best for residential roofing in India?
For residential roofing in India, the recommended specification depends on budget and required life:

Economy (10–12 year life expectation):
0.40–0.45mm BMT PPGI Z120, standard PE top coat. Suitable for farm sheds, small residential outbuildings, budget construction.

Standard Residential (15–18 year life):
0.47mm BMT PPGI Z180 — this is the most commonly used residential standard in India. Available across all major building material distributors. Good balance of cost, weight, and life. Standard PE paint, corrugated or tile profile.

Premium Residential (20–25 year life):
0.50mm BMT PPGL AZ100 with SMP or HDP paint. TATA Galcolor or JSW Colour Coat. Higher initial cost but significantly reduced maintenance and replacement costs over the building lifetime.

Coastal locations (within 10 km of sea):
Upgrade to PPGL (Galvalume) minimum AZ100, and use Z275 or AZ150 if within 5km. The extra cost of PPGL vs PPGI is recovered within 5–7 years in reduced replacement frequency.
What is the current PPGI roofing sheet price in India 2026?
Indicative ex-stockist prices for PPGI/PPGL roofing sheets in India (April 2026, includes GST 18%):

PPGI — Prepainted Galvanised (Z180, PE paint, corrugated):
— 0.40mm BMT: ₹66,000–70,000 per MT
— 0.47mm BMT: ₹68,000–74,000 per MT
— 0.50mm BMT: ₹70,000–76,000 per MT
— 0.55mm BMT: ₹72,000–78,000 per MT

PPGL — Prepainted Galvalume (AZ100, PE paint, corrugated):
— 0.47mm BMT: ₹73,000–80,000 per MT
— 0.55mm BMT: ₹76,000–84,000 per MT

Per-sheet indicative cost (0.47mm × 1m cover × 3m length, PPGI Z180):
— Weight ~12.9 kg × ₹71,000/MT = approximately ₹915 per sheet (April 2026)

Note: Prices fluctuate with HR coil input prices. Premium mills (TATA, JSW Colour Coat) command a 5–8% premium over secondary material. Always compare on per-MT basis, not per-sheet basis, to avoid size/weight tricks.
