Simple steps to get accurate stainless steel sheet weight for procurement, fabrication and structural calculations
Click a grade card (SS 304, SS 316, SS 202 etc.) to auto-fill the correct density. SS 304 density = 7.93 g/cm³. SS 316 = 7.98 g/cm³. SS 202 = 7.80 g/cm³. Using the correct density for each grade gives accurate weight — do not use the generic 7.85 g/cm³ (mild steel) for SS.
Pick from the IS 6911 standard thickness series (0.30mm to 12mm) in the dropdown. For non-standard thicknesses, choose "Custom thickness" and enter the exact value. For coils, use the nominal gauge thickness from the mill test certificate.
Enter the sheet width and length in mm. The default values (1219 × 2438 mm) are the standard 4×8 ft sheet size most widely stocked in India. For coils, enter the coil width and the running length of material required.
Enter the number of sheets in your order or project. The calculator instantly shows total weight in kg and MT — ready to use for purchase orders, logistics planning, and structural dead load input for IS 875 Part 1 load calculations.
Results show: kg/m² (dead load input), kg/sheet (handling/logistics), total kg, total MT (for purchase orders), sheets per tonne (supplier billing reference). All update instantly on any input change.
Scroll to the full IS 6911 weight table below. Click any row to populate the calculator. The table covers all standard thicknesses from 0.30mm to 12mm with weight per m² for each SS grade — useful for comparing weight vs. thickness when selecting material for a project.
The exact formula used — apply for any stainless steel grade and sheet dimension
Width in mm ÷ 1000 = width in m. Length in mm ÷ 1000 = length in m. Thickness stays in mm — the formula is written to use mm directly with g/cm³ density. Example: 1219mm = 1.219m, 2438mm = 2.438m.
1.0mm × 1.219m × 2.438m × 7.93 g/cm³ = 23.57 kg per sheet. The unit conversion works because 1 mm × 1 m² = 0.001 m³ = 1,000 cm³, and 1,000 cm³ × 7.93 g/cm³ = 7,930 g = 7.93 kg/m² for 1mm thickness.
Total weight (kg) = weight per sheet × number of sheets. Total MT = total kg ÷ 1000. For a 50-sheet order of 1.0mm × 4×8 ft SS 304: 23.57 kg × 50 = 1,178.5 kg = 1.18 MT. Use this to raise your purchase order in MT with your SS stockist.
Stainless steel 304 (Fe-18%Cr-8%Ni) has a slightly higher density than mild steel (7.85 g/cm³) due to the chromium and nickel alloying elements. IS 6911 and ASTM A240 both reference 7.93 g/cm³ for the 304 austenitic family. Using 7.85 underestimates SS 304 weight by about 1% — small but significant for large tonnage orders.

Key properties and density values for stainless steel grades available at Indian stockists in 2026
Density: 7.93 g/cm³
18% Cr + 8% Ni. The standard austenitic grade used in 70%+ of Indian SS applications. Excellent corrosion resistance in most environments. Not suitable for marine or chloride-rich environments. Widely stocked by Jindal Stainless, Chromeni, Salem Steel. Available as 2B, BA, No.4.
Density: 7.98 g/cm³
18% Cr + 10–14% Ni + 2–3% Mo. Molybdenum addition gives superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chlorides. Preferred for coastal projects (Mumbai, Chennai, Visakhapatnam), pharmaceutical clean rooms, and marine equipment. ~15–20% premium over SS 304 in India.
Density: 7.80 g/cm³
Indian economy grade — 17–19% Cr + 4–6% Ni, with Mn replacing some Ni. 20–25% cheaper than SS 304. Widely used in India for kitchen sinks, utensils, retail display, building interior. Lower corrosion resistance than 304. Do NOT specify for outdoor or food-contact applications in humid/coastal regions.
Density: 7.75 g/cm³
Ferritic grade — 16–18% Cr, no nickel. Magnetic. Lower cost than austenitic grades. Used in automotive exhaust trim, kitchen appliance panels, and decorative architectural elements. Lower corrosion resistance than 304. Widely stocked in India for coloured PVD sheets.
Density: 7.93 g/cm³
25% Cr + 20% Ni. Designed for high-temperature applications up to 1050°C continuous service. Used in furnace components, heat exchangers, refractory anchors, and kiln furniture. Limited availability at Indian stockists — typically imported or custom ordered from Jindal Stainless for special projects.
Density: 7.93 g/cm³
18% Cr + 10% Ni + Titanium stabiliser. Prevents sensitisation (carbide precipitation at welds). Used in welded assemblies that cannot be solution annealed after fabrication — pressure vessels, chemical plant pipework, flanges. Available from Jindal and POSCO India. Weight same as SS 304 per m².

Key industries and end-uses driving SS 304 sheet demand across India in 2026
Modular kitchen counters, work tables, range hoods, dish-washing units, refrigeration panels, and food trolleys across Indian hotels, restaurants, cloud kitchens, and QSR chains use 1.0–2.0mm SS 304 No.4 finish. The Swachh Bharat push and FSSAI hygiene standards have increased institutional kitchen SS demand significantly.
Reaction vessels, holding tanks, transfer pipes, filter housings, and clean room panels in Indian pharma facilities (Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Baddi pharma clusters) use SS 304 and SS 316 sheet. FDA/GMP compliance mandates SS 304 minimum for food-contact surfaces. Engineers need accurate kg/m² for vessel dead load and foundation design.
Building facades, lift lobbies, column cladding, wall panels, handrails, and entrance canopies in premium commercial developments in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad use 0.8–1.5mm SS 304 BA or No.4 finish. Structural engineers need the sheet dead load (kg/m²) for curtain wall sub-frame design per IS 875 Part 1.
Overhead water storage tanks, underground sumps, RO plant housings, pump casings, and water treatment vessels across Indian municipal and industrial water projects increasingly use SS 304 to replace GI and plastic. Accurate tonnage calculation is essential for structural support design and project material procurement BOQ.
Metro rail coach interiors, bus body panels, railway wagon components, and automotive exhaust systems in India use SS 304 and SS 409/430 sheets. Indian Railways specifies SS 304 2B for coach interior panelling. The Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru Metro expansions in 2026 are significant SS sheet consumers.
OT tables, instrument trolleys, IV stands, sluice sinks, sterilisation equipment, and hospital furniture use SS 304 for ease of sterilisation and NABH/JCI compliance. AIIMS, Apollo, and Fortis expansions drive significant SS 304 sheet demand. No.4 brushed finish is standard for hospital environments across India.
Practical guidance for fabricators, procurement teams and structural engineers
7.85 g/cm³ is mild steel density. SS 304 is 7.93 g/cm³ — a 1% difference. For a 1.0mm × 4×8 ft sheet: using 7.85 gives 23.36 kg vs correct 23.57 kg (+0.21 kg). On a 50-tonne order that is 250 kg of under-measurement — a significant supplier billing discrepancy. Always specify and calculate using grade-correct density values.
SS 202 (Ni content 4–6%) is frequently substituted for SS 304 (Ni 8%) by unscrupulous Indian secondary market suppliers — it is 20–25% cheaper. To verify: use a Nickel Spot Test Kit (available on Amazon India for ₹500–1000) or a portable XRF analyser at major project sites. SS 202 fails in chloride environments and will rust within 1–3 years on coastal buildings.
Indian SS stockists sell both 4×8 ft (1219×2438mm) and metric 1000×2000mm or 1250×2500mm sizes. A 4×8 ft sheet at 1mm SS 304 weighs 23.57 kg. A 1000×2000mm sheet at 1mm SS 304 weighs 15.86 kg. Always confirm the exact sheet size on the stockist's price list — "4×8" and "1220×2440" look similar but there is a 6cm width difference that affects material yield on larger fabrications.
Weigh a sample sheet on a calibrated platform scale at goods receipt. Compare against the calculator result. A 2mm SS 304 sheet (1219×2438mm) should weigh 47.15 kg ± 2%. Consistent underweight sheets indicate below-spec thickness — common with secondary-market material. Request the MTC showing IS 6911 compliance and check the BIS mark on each coil/bundle label.
SS is sold per kg in India. After calculating total weight with this tool: multiply by the current market ₹/kg rate to get material cost. Example: 50 sheets × 1mm × 4×8 ft = 1,178.5 kg × ₹205/kg = ₹2,41,593. Add cutting charges (₹2–8/kg for shearing) and delivery to get the landed cost. Use "Sheets per Tonne" to verify the supplier's billing per MT.
Always write the full specification on your PO: "SS 304, IS 6911, 2B Finish, 1.0mm BMT, 1219×2438mm, BIS certified (Lic. No. XXXX)". Without IS 6911 citation, suppliers may deliver ASTM A240 or inferior SS with no local standard guarantee. For government or defence projects, IS 6911 BIS certification is mandatory. Verify the BIS licence at bis.gov.in before order placement.
