Equal Tee Bar and Unequal Tee Section with all key dimensions labeled clearly
B = Flange Width | D = Total Depth | tf = Flange Thickness | tw = Web Thickness | Web Height = D − tf
Simple steps to calculate equal and unequal Tee Bar weight as per IS 1173 India
Select Equal Tee for standard IS 1173 tee bars where flange width equals total depth and a single thickness applies to both. Select Unequal Tee for cut-from-I-section structural tees or custom profiles with different flange and web dimensions.
Enter the full horizontal flange width in millimetres. For standard IS 1173 equal tee bars, this equals the total depth. Common Indian market sizes range from 20 mm to 150 mm. Refer to the IS 1173 reference table below for standard sizes.
For Equal Tee, enter one thickness value (t) applied to both flange and web. For Unequal Tee, enter Total Depth (D), Flange Thickness (tf) and Web Thickness (tw) separately. Web height is automatically computed as D − tf.
Enter length in metres. IS 1173 tee bars are supplied in standard 6 m and 12 m lengths across India. Enter quantity for total batch weight useful for procurement, crane pick and project cost estimation per metric tonne.
IS 1173 tee bars are hot rolled from mild steel (IS 2062 E250). For stainless steel tee sections used in food, pharma or coastal applications, select SS 304 or SS 316. Custom density option available for alloy or non-ferrous tees.
Results show kg/m for comparison with IS 1173 datasheet, weight per section, total kg, metric tonnes, total cross-section area and flange area separately — useful for structural design checks per IS 800:2007.
Exact area and weight calculation method for both equal and unequal tee sections
The flange is the full-width horizontal top bar of the T. Its area = B × tf. For a 75×75×8 equal tee, flange area = 75 × 8 = 600 mm². This is the wider part that resists compression in beam applications per IS 800:2007.
The web is the vertical stem of the T, with height = D − tf. Its area = tw × (D − tf). For 75×75×8 equal tee, web area = 8 × (75 − 8) = 8 × 67 = 536 mm². The web resists shear forces in structural applications.
For equal tee bars (B = D, tf = tw = t), the combined formula simplifies to Area = t × (2B − t). Example: 75×75×8 → Area = 8 × (150 − 8) = 8 × 142 = 1136 mm². Weight = 1136 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 8.92 kg/m.
Flange = 150 × 10 = 1500 mm²
Web = 8 × (75 − 10) = 8 × 65 = 520 mm²
Total Area = 1500 + 520 = 2020 mm²
kg/m = 2020 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 15.86 kg/m
Per section = 15.86 × 6 = 95.13 kg
Total = 95.13 × 25 = 2378 kg = 2.378 MT

Standard density values for tee bar and tee section weight calculation across Indian industry
IS 2062 E250 and E350 have identical density of 7.85 g/cm³ — grade only determines yield strength, not weight. Always verify with mill test certificate for IS 800:2007 structural design compliance per BIS standards.
Where tee bars and structural tee sections are used across India's engineering and construction sectors
T-sections are widely used as stiffening ribs on machine tool beds, press frames and lathe beds across Indian machine tool manufacturers in Pune, Rajkot, Coimbatore and Ludhiana.
Structural tees cut from ISMB sections are used for crane runway brackets, monorail supports and overhead conductor rail brackets in Indian steel plants, ports and metro rail projects.
Stainless steel and aluminium tee sections form the horizontal and vertical mullion grid of glass curtain walls on commercial buildings across Indian metros — IT parks, airports and hotels.
Tee stiffeners welded onto flat plates form bulkhead panels, tank web frames and deck plating stiffeners in vessels built at Mazagon Dock, Cochin Shipyard and Garden Reach — weight accuracy is critical for stability calculations.
Equal tee bars (T 50×50 to T 100×100) are used as guide rails, stiffeners and support brackets on conveyors, elevators and material handling equipment in Indian cement, mining and steel plants.
Smaller IS 1173 tee bars (T 20×20 to T 50×50) are used in industrial furniture, rack systems, shelving frames and light fabrication by small workshops and fabricators across India.
Best practices used by Indian structural engineers, fabricators and quantity surveyors
Large structural tee sections in India are often cut (split) from ISMB, ISWB or ISHB I-sections by longitudinal flame or plasma cutting. The resulting tee has unequal flange and web thicknesses matching the original I-section. Use the Unequal Tee mode in this calculator for these cut-tee sections and refer to IS 808:1989 for parent section dimensions.
Hot rolled IS 1173 tee bars have a root fillet radius at the flange-web junction, which slightly increases the actual weight above the sharp-corner calculated value by approximately 2–4%. For structural BOQ preparation, use the published IS 1173 table values — always verify against supplier MTR for accuracy.
For the same weight per metre, a tee section provides better lateral stiffness than an equal angle but less than a channel. For beam applications, structural tees have excellent compression flange efficiency. Always verify section modulus and moment of inertia from IS 808 property tables when using in IS 800:2007 design.
IS 1173 allows ±3% weight tolerance on hot rolled tee bars. For procurement planning in India, always add a 3–5% material buffer over your calculated net weight to cover mill tolerance, cutting losses and handling wastage. For orders above 10 MT, request weigh-slip certified delivery from the stockist.
IS 1173 equal tee bars are priced at approximately ₹68,000–₹82,000 per MT ex-Mumbai/Delhi in 2026 depending on size and quantity. Smaller sizes (T 20×20 to T 40×40) carry a 10–15% premium over larger structural sizes. SAIL and RINL (Vizag Steel) are the primary IS 1173 producers in India. Always confirm current rates with your local stockist.
For Indian government and infrastructure projects, tee bars must be supplied with IS 1173:1978 certification and IS 2062 material compliance. Always specify the IS grade (E250 or E350) on purchase orders. The Mill Test Certificate (MTC) must show chemical composition, tensile strength and yield strength — mandatory for PWD, CPWD and Railways projects.
