Six steps to get a complete landed-cost estimate for any steel sheet procurement in India
Click a material card (MS HR, CR, GI, PPGI, SS 304 etc.) or use the dropdown. The rate field auto-fills with the 2026 India reference price for that material. Adjust the rate to match your actual supplier quote before calculating.
Enter thickness (mm), width (mm) and length (mm). Default is 1mm × 1220×2440mm (standard 4×8 ft sheet). For non-standard sizes, enter exact dimensions from the supplier's size list or your drawing.
Enter the supplier's quoted rate in ₹ per MT. If your supplier quotes ₹/kg, multiply by 1000. Enter the number of sheets required. The calculator converts weight to MT and applies the rate automatically.
Set wastage % (typically 5–12% for cutting and offcuts). Add cutting charges per kg (₹2–8/kg for shearing). Add freight in ₹/MT for your delivery location. Toggle each charge on/off as needed.
Select the applicable GST rate (18% standard for most steel products in India). Add a contractor margin % if preparing a client quotation. Toggle GST off for registered dealers computing input tax credit separately.
The cost breakdown table shows every line item — material, cutting, freight, GST, margin and grand total. Use Print to save a hard copy for your site manager or client. Use Copy Summary to paste into a WhatsApp message or email to your supplier.

What each charge means and typical ranges in the Indian steel market
The ex-stockist price for the material before any additional charges. Always confirm whether the quoted rate is ex-works (you arrange transport), ex-stockist (local depot), or delivered (includes freight). Indian stockists typically quote ex-stockist Mumbai or Delhi — add freight separately for your site.
Charged by service centres and stockists for shearing, plasma, laser, or waterjet cutting from standard coil/sheet to your required sizes. Typical India ranges: Shearing ₹2–4/kg | Plasma ₹4–8/kg | Laser ₹8–25/kg. Some stockists include one free shear cut per sheet — ask before adding this charge.
Transport from stockist to your project site. Typical freight rates in India: Local city (within 50km) ₹500–1,500/MT | Regional (50–300km) ₹1,500–3,500/MT | Long haul (300km+) ₹3,500–7,000/MT. For small quantities, minimum freight charges often apply regardless of weight — typically ₹500–2,000 per trip.
Material required over and above the net design quantity, to account for cutting offcuts, edge trimming, damaged sheets and site losses. Typical allowances: Standard sheet cutting: 5% | Profiled roofing (ridge, valley cuts): 8–12% | Complex fabrication with many small pieces: 12–18% | Blanking/pressing (stamping): 15–25%. This increases the weight you must order and therefore the material cost.
Most steel sheet products in India attract GST @ 18% under HSN codes 7208–7216 (HR/CR/coated steel). Pre-painted sheets (PPGI/PPGL) also attract 18% GST. Stainless steel sheets: 18% GST. Aluminium sheets: 18% GST. Registered GST dealers can claim input tax credit (ITC) — toggle GST off if computing net-of-ITC cost for your project.
Mark-up applied by a contractor or sub-contractor when quoting material cost to a client. Typical ranges: Government/institutional projects: 8–12% | Private industrial: 10–15% | Turnkey EPC contracts: 12–20%. Toggle this on when generating a client quotation — leave it off when calculating your own procurement cost.
Practical guidance for contractors, procurement teams and project engineers
Indian secondary market suppliers often quote "₹X per sheet" which obscures the true per-kg rate. A "₹450 per sheet" 26G PPGI roofing sheet at 0.457mm BMT weighs ~3.8 kg — that is ₹118/kg or ₹118,000/MT. A BIS-certified mill stockist quoting ₹72,000/MT for the same spec is clearly cheaper. Always convert to ₹/MT for comparison. This estimator uses ₹/MT — enter the sheet price × sheets-per-tonne to convert.
For tender submissions, keep the material cost BOQ (sheets, weight, rate) separate from the fabrication BOQ (labour, welding, painting). Using this estimator for material cost and adding fabrication separately avoids disputes during bill certification, allows material price variation claims, and simplifies GST input credit tracking for registered contractors.
MS HR sheet prices in India directly follow Hot Rolled Coil (HRC) prices from JSW, SAIL, Tata Steel, and JSPL. Check monthly HRC benchmark prices from Steel Mint or SteelGuru India before placing large orders. A ₹2,000/MT drop in HRC can save ₹1–2 lakh on a 50–100MT project. For government tenders with 2–3 month lead times, add a 5–8% price escalation contingency.
Most Indian service centres and coil processors have MOQs: CR/HR sheets: 2–5 MT minimum for standard sizes | PPGI/GI roofing: 1–3 MT minimum from coil | SS 304: 100–500 kg minimum. Below MOQ, a "small order surcharge" of ₹2,000–5,000/MT applies. Factor this into your estimate for small projects. Buying excess to hit MOQ may be cheaper than the surcharge — use the estimator to compare both scenarios.
BIS-certified IS 14246 PPGI from JSW/Tata Shaktee/JSPL commands a premium of ₹3,000–6,000/MT over non-certified material. However, BIS-certified sheets carry correct BMT (0.47mm is 0.47mm, not 0.40mm) and correct coating weight. On a 10MT order, the weight shortfall in non-certified material (often 10–15% under-spec) means you are actually paying more per true-kg delivered. For government and institutional projects, BIS IS mark is mandatory.
Use accurate wastage percentages for each sheet type: Plain flat sheets for rectangular parts: 3–5% | Profiled roofing (hip ends, ridge, valleys): 8–12% | Circular/irregular blanks from sheet: 15–25% | Complex laser cut profiles: 10–20% | Welded fabrication with many offcuts: 12–18%. Over-estimating wastage wastes budget; under-estimating causes site delays and re-orders at higher spot prices.
