Indian Standards for Steel Sheet Thickness

The six BIS standards that govern sheet metal thickness specification, tolerance and testing in India

Cold Rolled
IS 513 : 2008
Cold Rolled Low Carbon Steel Sheets & Strips
The primary BIS standard for CR sheet thickness. Covers grades CR1–CR5 with nominal thicknesses from 0.25mm to 4.00mm. Specifies thickness tolerances by width and grade, surface finish (D, B, G), and mechanical properties. Used as the base standard for PPGI (IS 14246) and GI (IS 277) sheets.
Hot Rolled
IS 1079 : 1994
Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Sheet & Strip
Governs HR sheet for general engineering. Thickness range: 1.60mm to 10.00mm. Defines tolerances for thickness, width, flatness, and camber. Grades include HR1 (commercial quality), HR2 (drawing quality), and HR3 (deep drawing). Used for press components, automotive, LPG cylinders (IS 6240), and general fabrication.
Structural
IS 2062 : 2011
Hot Rolled Medium & High Tensile Steel
Structural steel plates and sheets for welded, bolted, and riveted fabrication. Thickness range: 5mm to 150mm for plates, thinner sections by agreement. Grades E250 (Fe 410), E350 (Fe 490), E450 (Fe 570). Covers chemical composition, yield strength (250–450 MPa), tensile strength, and Charpy impact values. Mandated for structural BIS certification.
Dimensions
IS 1730 : 1989
Dimensions for Steel Plates, Sheets, Strips & Flats
Defines preferred dimensions (thickness × width × length) for ordering and supply of steel plates and sheets in India. Nominal thicknesses: 0.50mm to 160mm in preferred series. Standard sheet widths: 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 2000mm. Standard lengths: 1250, 2000, 2500, 5000, 6000mm. Essential reference for procurement and workshop planning.
Galvanized
IS 277 : 2003
Galvanized Steel Sheets (Plain & Corrugated)
Covers hot-dip galvanized steel sheets for roofing, cladding, and general use. Base metal thickness range: 0.25mm to 2.00mm (BMT). Zinc coating classes: Z100 to Z275 (g/m² both sides). Includes requirements for zinc adherence, coating mass testing, and finish. Base material conforming to IS 513. Predecessor to IS 14246 for pre-painted products.
PPGI / PPGL
IS 14246 : 2013
Continuously Pre-Painted Galvanized Steel Sheets
Governs PPGI and PPGL (Galvalume) pre-painted sheets. BMT range: 0.25mm to 1.60mm. References IS 513 for base metal thickness tolerances. Specifies coating adhesion, paint thickness (top coat 15–25 μm, back coat 8–15 μm), colour, gloss, and reverse impact. Updated to IS 14246:2024 — now covering enhanced coating grades and updated zinc standards.
Stainless
IS 6911 : 1992
Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet & Strip
Specifies stainless steel flat products for austenitic (304, 316, 321), ferritic (430), and martensitic grades. Thickness range: 0.30mm to 100mm. Covers chemical composition, mechanical properties (0.2% proof stress, UTS, elongation), and surface finish categories (2B, BA, No.4, No.8 mirror). Tolerances per IS 6911 Table 1–4 by width and thickness.
Wire / Sheet
BS 3737 : 1964
Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) — adopted in India
British standard gauge system adopted by India for specifying GI wire and sheet thickness in trade. SWG 7/0 (12.700mm) to SWG 50 (0.0254mm). Common roofing sheet gauges: SWG 24 = 0.559mm, SWG 26 = 0.457mm. IS 280 (mild steel wire) and IS 4826 (GI coatings) reference SWG for wire diameter. Modern IS standards are transitioning to direct mm specification.

Important — IS 2062 Mass Tolerance:
For structural steel plates (IS 2062), thickness tolerance is not tabulated as ±mm — instead, IS 2062 specifies a mass tolerance of ±2.5% per plate and ±2.0% per consignment. For individual thickness measurement, IS 2062 references IS 1730 and EN 10029 equivalent methods. Always request the MTC with actual measured dimensions for structural plates above 10mm.

Pro Tips for Steel Sheet Thickness Specification in India

Guidance for engineers, procurement teams, and fabricators on using IS standards correctly

Specify BMT — Never SWG Alone

For PPGI and GI roofing sheets, always specify BMT in mm alongside the SWG on your drawing or purchase order. "26G PPGI" is ambiguous — a BIS-certified mill will supply 0.457mm BMT but an uncertified secondary market supplier may supply 0.40mm TCT (which is ~0.36mm BMT after subtracting coating) and call it "26G". Write "26G SWG / 0.457mm BMT minimum, IS 14246:2013 BIS certified" for clarity.

Always Request Mill Test Certificate (MTC)

For any steel sheet used in structural or safety-critical applications, demand the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) from the supplier. A valid MTC will state: heat number, chemical composition, mechanical properties, actual measured thickness, and the BIS IS number. Cross-check the BIS licence number on bis.gov.in before accepting delivery. Fabricators who skip MTC verification face rejection of welded structures at third-party inspection.

Measuring Actual Thickness on Site

Use a calibrated digital vernier or micrometer to measure actual sheet thickness on delivery. Measure at least 3 points — both ends and centre — across the width. Compare against IS tolerance tables above. A 0.50mm CR sheet with ±0.040mm tolerance is acceptable between 0.460mm and 0.540mm. Reject sheets outside this range before cutting — you cannot claim replacement after fabrication.

Verify Sheet Weight to Check Thickness

A practical field check: weigh a full sheet on a platform scale and compare against the calculated value. For a 1250×2500mm CR sheet at 1.00mm IS 513: weight = 1.25 × 2.5 × 7.85 = 24.53 kg. If your measured weight is significantly less (e.g. 22 kg), the sheet is approximately 0.90mm — you are receiving under-thickness material. This test catches TMT bar substitution and under-gauge sheet fraud common in secondary markets.

CR vs HR — Choose the Right One

CR sheet (IS 513) has tighter thickness tolerances, better surface finish, and higher yield strength due to work hardening. HR sheet (IS 1079) is cheaper and available in greater thicknesses. For press forming, enclosures, and visible surfaces — use CR. For heavy-duty brackets, structural gussets, bases, and boilerwork ≥2.5mm — use HR or IS 2062 plate. Mixing up the standard on a drawing leads to mismatched procurement and failed fit-up during assembly.

IS 2062 Tolerance Applies to Mass — Not Thickness

A common misconception: engineers specify "IS 2062 ±0.5mm" on structural plate drawings. IS 2062 does not define thickness tolerance in mm — it uses a ±2.5% mass per plate allowance. For accurate dimensional control on structural plates, additionally cite IS 1730 preferred thickness series and request camber, flatness, and squareness conformance. For critical pressure vessels or bridges, specify EN 10029 tolerance class C or D explicitly on the drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about steel sheet thickness standards in India

What is the difference between IS 513 and IS 1079 for steel sheets?
IS 513 covers Cold Rolled (CR) steel sheets and strips. The rolling is done at room temperature after hot rolling and annealing. CR sheets have a smoother surface, tighter thickness tolerances, and slightly higher yield strength due to work hardening. Available from 0.25mm to 4.00mm.

IS 1079 covers Hot Rolled (HR) steel sheets. Rolling is done at high temperature (above recrystallization). HR sheets have a mill scale surface, looser tolerances, and lower cost. Available from 1.60mm to 10.0mm.

Choose CR when: surface finish matters, tight tolerances needed, thickness < 2mm, press forming required.
Choose HR when: thickness > 2.5mm, structural/load-bearing use, lower cost is priority, surface will be painted or coated.
What IS standard covers MS plate thickness in India?
MS (Mild Steel) plates in India are governed by two standards depending on use:

IS 2062:2011 — Structural steel plates for welded, bolted, and riveted construction. Covers grades E250 (Fe410), E350 (Fe490), E450 (Fe570), E550. Thickness: 5mm to 150mm. Specifies yield strength, UTS, elongation, and Charpy impact. Mandatory BIS mark for structural projects.

IS 1730:1989 — Defines preferred dimensions (thickness series, width, length) for ordering. Not a material specification — it is a dimensional standard that works alongside IS 2062.

For special applications: IS 2002 (boiler plates), IS 2041 (pressure vessel plates), IS 1570 (alloy steel plates).
What does IS 513 Grade CR1, CR2, CR3, CR4, CR5 mean?
IS 513:2008 classifies CR sheets by formability grade:

— CR1 — Commercial Quality (CQ): General fabrication, no specific forming requirement. Most widely available.
— CR2 — Drawing Quality (DQ): Moderate deep drawing. Used for simple drawn parts, enclosures.
— CR3 — Deep Drawing Quality (DDQ): Improved ductility for deeper drawn components. Automotive outer panels.
— CR4 — Extra Deep Drawing Quality (EDDQ): Critical drawn parts — automotive A/B pillars, complex stampings.
— CR5 — Extra Deep Drawing Quality Special (EDDQ-S): Most formable. Used for the most complex stampings where splitting/earing must be minimised.

Higher CR grade = more controlled microstructure = higher cost. For structural and general fabrication in India, CR1 is standard. For press shops supplying automotive OEMs (Maruti, Tata, Hyundai plants), CR3 and CR4 are specified.
What are the standard MS sheet sizes available in India?
Per IS 1730:1989 and Indian market availability:

Most common stocked sizes at Indian service centres:
— 1220 × 2440 mm (8 × 4 ft) — Most widely available for HR and CR sheets up to 6mm
— 1250 × 2500 mm — Standard metric size for CR coil cut sheets
— 1500 × 3000 mm — HR and plates above 4mm
— 1500 × 6000 mm / 1500 × 6300 mm — Standard plate size from SAIL and JSW
— 2000 × 8000 mm / 2500 × 10000 mm — Heavy structural plates, shipbuilding, pressure vessels

Preferred thickness series (IS 1730): 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 8.0, 10.0, 12.0, 16.0, 20.0, 25.0mm (and above for plates).
What is the thickness tolerance for PPGI roofing sheets under IS 14246?
IS 14246:2013 Clause 9.4.1 specifies that thickness tolerances for PPGI sheets shall be per IS 513 on the Base Metal Thickness (BMT).

For the most common roofing sheet thicknesses:
— 0.40mm BMT: Tolerance ±0.040mm → acceptable range 0.360–0.440mm
— 0.47mm BMT: Tolerance ±0.040mm → acceptable range 0.430–0.510mm
— 0.50mm BMT: Tolerance ±0.040mm → acceptable range 0.460–0.540mm

Additionally: Width tolerance = only positive (+10mm). Sheets cannot be narrower than specified. Flatness deviation: up to 15mm for sheets ≤0.7mm BMT width ≤1200mm.

Note: Tolerance is on BMT — not on Total Coated Thickness (TCT). The zinc coating is not included in the thickness tolerance measurement.
Which Indian standard governs stainless steel sheet thickness?
IS 6911:1992 governs stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip in India. It covers:

— Austenitic grades: 304 (Cr-Ni), 316 (Cr-Ni-Mo), 321 (Ti-stabilised), 310 (high temp), 202 (Indian budget grade)
— Ferritic grades: 430 (Cr only), 409 (automotive exhaust)
— Martensitic grades: 420 (cutlery)

Thickness range: 0.30mm (foil) to 100mm (heavy plate). Standard surface finishes: 2B (cold rolled, skin-passed — most common in India), BA (bright annealed), No.4 (brushed), No.8 (mirror polish).

Jindal Stainless (JSL) and Chromeni Steels are the primary Indian producers. For imported SS, ASTM A240 (USA) and EN 10088-2 (Europe) are equivalent standards — tolerances differ slightly from IS 6911.
