How to calculate metal material cost manually using weight and rate per kg — with and without GST
Weight: 850 kg
Rate: ₹60/kg (IS 2062 E250)
Wastage: 5%
GST: 18%
Gross weight = 850 × 1.05 = 892.5 kg
Base cost = 892.5 × 60 = ₹53,550
GST = 53,550 × 18% = ₹9,639
Total = ₹63,189
Weight: 120 kg
Rate: ₹250/kg (SS 304 sheet)
Qty: 3 lots
Wastage: 8%
GST: 18%
Gross wt = 120 × 1.08 × 3 = 388.8 kg
Base = 388.8 × 250 = ₹97,200
GST = ₹17,496
Total = ₹1,14,696
ISMB 300: 2,200 kg × ₹63 = ₹1,38,600
ISMC 200: 850 kg × ₹62 = ₹52,700
MS Plate: 1,100 kg × ₹60 = ₹66,000
GI Sheet Z275: 600 kg × ₹76 = ₹45,600
Net material = ₹3,02,900
+ 18% GST = ₹54,522
+ Transport = ₹12,000
Grand Total = ₹3,69,422
Copper bus bar: 35 kg
Rate: ₹800/kg
Wastage: 3%
GST: 18%
Gross wt = 35 × 1.03 = 36.05 kg
Base = 36.05 × 800 = ₹28,840
GST = ₹5,191
Total = ₹34,031
Step-by-step guide to getting accurate material cost estimates for your project
Use our Sheet Weight Calculator, Pipe Weight Calculator, Beam Weight Calculator, or Channel Calculator to calculate the total kg for each section. Enter that weight into this estimator.
Select the metal type from the dropdown to auto-fill an indicative rate, or enter a custom ₹/kg rate from your supplier quote. Always use the actual supplier quote for final project budgeting — use the indicative rates only for preliminary estimates.
Select a wastage percentage based on your job type. 5% is recommended for standard fabrication with normal cutting. Use 8–10% for jobs with many short pieces, complex shapes, or first-time setups. Wastage adds to your gross procurement weight and total cost.
Select the applicable GST rate. Most structural steel, aluminium, copper, and stainless steel products attract 18% GST in India under HSN 7208–7326. If you are GST-registered with input tax credit (ITC), you can recover GST — the ex-GST base cost is your effective procurement cost.
Switch to the Multi-Item BOM tab for projects with multiple materials. Add each item (beam, channel, sheet, pipe, etc.) with its own weight and rate. The BOM estimator calculates individual item costs, applies overall wastage and GST, adds misc/transport charges, and gives a grand total.
After calculating the multi-item BOM, use your browser's Print (Ctrl+P) to save the BOM summary as a PDF for sharing with clients, management, or for project records. The print view shows only the BOM table and totals — no calculator or navigation elements.
Key factors that cause metal prices to vary across suppliers, cities, and timeframes in India
Practical advice for fabricators, project managers, and procurement teams building material budgets
Steel prices in India change weekly. Copper and SS can change daily. Any BOM built more than 2 weeks ago may have rate errors of 5–10%. For projects above ₹5 lakh in metal value, always refresh your ₹/kg rates from your actual supplier before finalising the project quote to client or management.
If your firm is GST-registered and uses metal for taxable outputs, the 18% GST you pay on metal purchase is fully recoverable as input tax credit (ITC). For internal project cost comparison, use the ex-GST base cost — not the GST-inclusive price — as your true material cost when comparing bids from different vendors.
Use the Misc. / Transport field in the Multi-Item BOM to capture freight cost. For within-city delivery in India, budget ₹800–₹2,000 per MT for structural steel. For inter-state movement, add ₹1,500–₹4,000 per MT depending on distance and vehicle size. These charges are often overlooked in initial estimates.
Standard shop wastage for Indian fabrication: 3–5% for simple rectangular cuts from sheet/plate; 5–8% for profiled parts, beam assembly, and channel fabrication; 8–12% for tube/pipe bending, complex layouts, and prototype fabrication. Under-estimating wastage is one of the most common causes of project budget overrun in Indian steel fabrication.
For any project above ₹2 lakh in material value, always prepare a full Bill of Materials (BOM) listing each item, weight, and rate before purchasing. The Multi-Item BOM above can serve as your working procurement document. A proper BOM prevents over-ordering, missed items, and post-project reconciliation disputes with clients.
For large orders placed 2–4 weeks before fabrication starts, ask your supplier for a rate validity period of 15–30 days. Most Indian structural steel stockists will honour a quoted rate for 2 weeks on written purchase orders. This protects your project margin from intervening SAIL/TATA list price increases between order placement and delivery.
