Why Cost from kg? The Fastest Method for Indian Fabricators

Weight-based costing is the industry standard across Indian sheet metal fabrication shops, PMC contractors and government BOQs

The Core Idea: In sheet metal fabrication, material weight (kg) is the single most reliable proxy for total cost — because cutting time, bending time, welding consumables, handling effort and freight all scale roughly proportionally with weight. Once you know the kg, you can build a complete cost estimate in under 5 minutes using the multiplier method.
Used by: CPWD and state PWD schedule of rates, Indian fabrication shops for quotations, steel construction PMCs for BOQ preparation, industrial project cost controllers, and import/export invoice valuation for Indian customs.
Costing Method Time Required Accuracy Best For Drawback
kg Multiplier (Fast Method) 5–15 min ±10–15% Tender budgets, quick quotes Less accurate for complex shapes
Operation-by-Operation 2–4 hours ±3–5% Final contract pricing Slow, needs detailed drawings
m² Rate Method 30–60 min ±8–12% Roofing and cladding only Fails for 3D fabricated items
Historical Rate Method 10–20 min ±10–20% Repeat similar jobs Needs past job data
Software (ERP / Quotation) 1–3 hours ±2–5% Large repeat production runs High setup cost, training needed

* The kg multiplier method is ideal for initial tender submissions, client budget approvals and vendor negotiations where speed matters more than precision.

The Master Formula

Every element of the fabrication cost expressed as a function of material weight

Complete Fabrication Cost Formula — India

Total Cost = Material + Labour + Consumables + Overhead + Profit + GST
Where each component is derived from weight (kg):
Material Cost = kg × ₹/kg (ex-works) × 1.18 (GST) + freight
Labour Cost = kg × labour rate (₹/kg) for job type
Consumables = kg × consumable rate (₹/kg) — electrodes, gas, discs
Overhead = (Material + Labour + Consumables) × overhead % (typically 15–20%)
Sub-total = Material + Labour + Consumables + Overhead
Profit = Sub-total × profit margin % (typically 10–15%)
Invoice Total = (Sub-total + Profit) × 1.18 ← GST 18% on fabrication service
GST Note for India: Sheet metal material supply attracts 18% GST (HSN 72xx/76xx). Sheet metal fabrication / job work also attracts 18% GST (SAC 9988). If your job is supply + erection, both components attract 18%. Always confirm the correct SAC/HSN with your CA before invoicing.

The 5-Step Fast Costing Method

Follow these steps in order — each one takes 1–2 minutes with the rate tables below

1

Calculate Material Weight (kg)

Use the formula: Weight (kg) = L(m) × W(m) × T(mm) × Density (g/cm³). Add wastage — typically 10–15% for fabricated items with offcuts, 20% for ductwork with bends. This is your purchase weight — the amount you actually buy from the mill/stockist.

Add a separate finished weight — deduct offcuts and trim to get the net weight in the finished product. The difference (wastage kg) has its own scrap recovery value that reduces your net material cost.

Purchase weight = Net weight × (1 + wastage %)
Scrap recovery = (Purchase − Net) × scrap rate (₹8–15/kg for MS offcuts)
Net material cost = (Purchase × buy rate) − Scrap recovery
2

Calculate Landed Material Cost

Multiply purchase weight by your current buy rate (₹/kg ex-stockist), then add 18% GST and freight. Use the table below for April 2026 indicative rates. For large orders (>5 tonnes), negotiate directly with the mill for ex-mill prices which are 5–8% below stockist rates.

3

Add Labour Cost (₹/kg by Job Type)

Labour is the most variable cost in Indian sheet metal fabrication — it depends on the complexity of the job, the skill level required and the region. The table below gives indicative all-in labour rates per kg for common job types in India 2026, including fitter, welder, helper and supervision.

* All-in labour rate includes fitter, welder, helper, supervision. Metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Pune) are 20–35% higher. Tier 2 cities (Nashik, Coimbatore, Rajkot) are 10–15% lower.

4

Add Consumables, Overhead and Profit

These three are most efficiently applied as percentages of the material + labour sub-total. The rates below are industry benchmarks for Indian sheet metal fabrication in 2026.

Consumables
4–8%
What's included:
Welding electrodes (₹120–200/kg), cutting discs (₹35–80 each), gas (O₂ + LPG/acetylene), grinding discs, marking consumables, abrasives, primer and paint (if applicable).

Rule: 6% of (mat + labour) for MIG/MMA welded jobs; 4% for cutting-only; 8% for heavy TIG/stainless work.
Overhead
15–20%
What's included:
Shop rent, electricity, machine depreciation (shearing, press brake, welding sets, plasma cutter), tool maintenance, transport vehicles, admin staff, accounting, insurance, quality inspection, bank charges.

Rule: 15% for large-order / single-type shops; 20% for small diversified fabricators with multiple machine types.
Profit Margin
10–15%
Benchmarks:
Government tender work (CPWD/PWD): 10–12% net margin after overhead. Private industrial work: 12–15%. Premium SS/specialty work: 15–20%. Sub-contract only (labour): 8–12%.

Rule: Apply profit to the total of material + labour + consumables + overhead — not just material.
GST on Service
18%
Applied to:
The full invoice value including profit — 18% GST (SAC 9988 for job work / fabrication). If you are supplying material + labour together, the entire amount attracts 18% GST.

Note: Job work for certain industries (e.g., furniture, printing) has 12% GST — confirm with CA for your exact SAC code.
5

Sanity Check with the Total Multiplier

The fastest cross-check: multiply your material cost alone by a job-type multiplier to get an approximate total invoice value. If your detailed calculation is within 10–15% of the multiplier estimate, you are in the right range. If the gap is larger, find the error before submitting.

Pro Tips for Indian Fabrication Costing

Practical guidance from Indian shop-floor estimators and project cost controllers

Always Credit Scrap Value

MS offcut scrap fetches ₹28–38/kg at scrap dealers (April 2026). On a job with 15% wastage from a 1,000 kg purchase, that is 150 kg × ₹33 = ₹4,950 scrap credit. Deduct this from material cost before calculating overhead and profit. On large jobs it can reduce material cost by 1–2%.

Location Adjusts Labour by ±20%

Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune and Bengaluru command 20–30% higher fabrication labour rates than the national average. Rajkot, Coimbatore, Nashik and Ludhiana are 10–15% below average. Always adjust your ₹/kg labour rate for the city where the work is being executed — not where your office is.

Payment Terms Affect Your Margin

Indian fabrication contracts with 30-day payment terms cost 1.5–2% of contract value in working capital (at 18% p.a. borrowing). 60-day terms cost 3%. Add a finance cost line to your cost sheet for any job with payment terms beyond 30 days — or build it into your profit margin.

Surface Finish Multiplies Labour

Bare fabrication vs painted vs powder coated changes labour + consumables by 30–60%. Add for surface treatment separately: primer + 2 coat enamel ≈ ₹18–25/kg; powder coating (outsourced) ≈ ₹35–55/kg; hot dip galvanising ≈ ₹22–35/kg. Never bury surface treatment in the base fabrication rate.

Price Escalation for Long Projects

Steel prices in India moved ±18% in 2024–25. For any fabrication contract longer than 3 months, include a price variation clause tied to SAIL/JSW published mill prices. A 10% steel price rise on a ₹20 lakh job = ₹2 lakh loss if you quoted fixed-price without escalation provision.

Include Retention and Warranty

Most Indian construction contracts retain 5–10% of contract value for 12–24 months. This retention is a real cost — money you have delivered but not received. Factor retention financing cost (5% retention × 18% interest × 12 months = 0.9% of contract value) into your overall margin calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Indian fabricators, contractors and project managers

What is a fair fabrication rate per kg for MS structural work in India 2026?
For medium-complexity MS structural fabrication (platforms, walkways, mezzanines) in India in 2026, a complete all-in rate including material, labour, consumables, overhead and 12% profit is approximately ₹180–260/kg for metro cities and ₹150–210/kg for Tier 2 cities — before GST. This translates to approximately ₹210–310/kg including 18% GST. The wide range reflects variation in complexity, order size, surface finish and local labour costs. Simple cut-and-weld jobs are at the lower end; complex multi-level structures with handrails and grating are at the upper end.
How do I cost GI ductwork per metre run for an HVAC quotation?
The fastest method for GI ductwork costing per metre run:
  1. Calculate duct perimeter: 2 × (Width + Depth) in metres
  2. Net sheet area per metre = perimeter × 1 m
  3. Add 18–20% for fittings (bends, offsets, reducers, tees)
  4. Multiply by 22 SWG GI kg/m² (5.65 kg/m²) to get weight per metre
  5. Apply the complete cost formula: landed material + ₹30–40/kg labour + consumables + overhead + profit + GST
Example: 600×400 mm duct, perimeter 2.0 m. Net area/m = 2.0 m². With fittings: 2.4 m². Weight/m: 2.4 × 5.65 = 13.6 kg/m. All-in cost ≈ ₹350–420 per metre run installed (before GST) in Bengaluru 2026.
Should GST on material and GST on labour be charged separately on an invoice?
It depends on your contract structure. If you are supplying material + fabrication as a composite supply (most common in Indian construction), the entire invoice value attracts 18% GST under the principal supply rule — typically HSN 73xx (fabricated articles of iron/steel) or SAC 9988 (manufacturing services). If you are doing pure job work (the client supplies material and you only fabricate), your labour invoice attracts 18% GST under SAC 9988. Always consult your CA to determine the correct GST treatment for your specific contract structure — incorrect classification can lead to ITC mismatch and notices.
What overhead percentage should a small Indian fabrication shop use?
For a small Indian sheet metal fabrication shop (5–15 workers, one location, annual turnover ₹1–5 crore), a realistic overhead allocation is 18–22% of direct cost (material + labour + consumables). This covers: shop rent (typically ₹25,000–80,000/month), electricity (₹15,000–40,000/month), machine depreciation (shears, press brake, welding sets), tool replacement, transport, accountant fees, insurance and bank charges. Many small shops underestimate overhead at 10–12% and then wonder why profits are lower than expected — properly tracking overhead is the first step to accurate profitability.
How do I handle steel price fluctuation in a long-duration fabrication contract?
Three standard approaches used in Indian construction contracts:
  1. Price variation clause (PVC): Contract price adjusts automatically based on SAIL/JSW published mill prices. Common in CPWD, NHAI and large industrial contracts. Formula: Adjustment = (Current index − Base index) / Base index × Material component of contract.
  2. Material procurement upfront: Buy and store all steel at the time of contract award to lock in the price. Requires working capital but eliminates price risk completely.
  3. Fixed price with contingency: Quote a fixed price but include a 5–8% contingency in your profit/overhead allocation to absorb price movements. Suitable only for contracts under 3 months duration.
For any contract over 3 months, always insist on a PVC clause — never quote a fixed price for a long-duration steel-intensive contract without price protection.
