* Weight = Length(m) × Width(m) × Thickness(mm) × 7.85 kg/m²/mm. MS density = 7,850 kg/m³. Values ±2.5% per IS 1730 mill tolerance. Standard sheet sizes as per IS 1730:1989 (HR sheets) and IS 513 (CR sheets). Source: BIS IS 1730 & IS 513.
How many kg per square metre of MS sheet at each standard thickness — the core lookup value for all MS sheet weight calculations

* kg/m² = Thickness (mm) × 7.85. This is the core conversion: memorise "1mm MS sheet = 7.85 kg/m²" and multiply by any thickness and area for instant weight.
Calculate MS sheet weight from dimensions in any unit system
Formula 1 — Dimensions in Metres & Millimetres (Recommended)
Formula 2 — All Dimensions in Millimetres
Formula 3 — Area in m² × Thickness in mm
Formula 4 — Dimensions in Feet & Thickness in mm
Divide length and width in mm by 1000 to get metres. Keep thickness in mm — do not convert. Example: 2500mm = 2.5m, 1250mm = 1.25m, thickness 6mm stays as 6.
Weight per sheet = 2.5 × 1.25 × 6 × 7.85 = 147.2 kg. The constant 7.85 is MS density in kg/m²/mm — it works for plain MS, HR and CR sheets (same density; different surface finish only).
Total weight = weight per sheet × number of sheets. 50 sheets of 147.2 kg = 7,360 kg. Convert to tonnes by dividing by 1,000: 7,360 ÷ 1,000 = 7.36 tonnes.
MS HR sheet rate (April 2026 India): ₹52,000–₹58,000/tonne. CR sheet: ₹56,000–₹64,000/tonne. Cost = Tonnes × ₹/tonne. Add GST @18% and freight for landed cost at site.

Both types use the same weight formula (density = 7.85) — the difference is in surface, tolerance and application
Common uses of mild steel sheet across Indian fabrication, construction and manufacturing sectors
MS HR sheets (2–10mm) are the primary material for general fabrication in Indian workshops — frames, brackets, gusset plates, base plates, machine guards and structural connections. 2.5–6mm HR is the most ordered thickness range in Indian steel service centres.
Water tanks, chemical storage tanks, oil storage, and pressure vessels in India are fabricated from MS HR sheets/plates (4–20mm). IS 2062 Grade E250/E350 plates are used for pressure vessels governed by IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations).
MS CR sheets (0.9–2.0mm, IS 513 Grade DD/EDD) are the standard material for vehicle body panels, truck bodies, tractor hoods, and two-wheeler body parts in India. CR sheet is also used for electrical enclosures, switchgear panels and meter boxes.
MS CR sheets (0.9–2.0mm) and HR sheets (2–3mm) are widely used for metal doors, rolling shutters, entrance gates and security grilles across Indian residential, industrial and commercial properties.
MS sheets (4–6mm) are used for steel form shuttering panels on Indian construction sites for concrete column, beam and slab formwork. Reusable steel formwork reduces timber consumption and is increasingly preferred on large concrete structures.
Chequered plates (3–10mm) and plain HR MS plates are used for industrial floor grating, equipment platforms, hopper linings, chutes, and wear-liner applications in Indian mining, cement, and material-handling industries.

Practical guidance from fabricators, procurement teams and site engineers
The fastest way to estimate MS sheet weight on site without a calculator: 7.85 × T (mm) = kg/m². Then multiply by area in m². For a 6mm sheet = 47.1 kg/m². A standard 2500×1250mm sheet (3.125 m²) = 47.1 × 3.125 = 147.2 kg. Fits in your memory in 30 seconds.
For fabrication projects with cuts, holes and notches, add 5–8% to your calculated weight for cutting waste and off-cuts. Structural work with simple plate cuts: add 3–5%. Complex pressed or laser-cut parts: add 8–12%. Underestimating waste is one of the most common procurement errors in Indian fabrication shops.
Weigh one sheet from a delivered bundle on a platform scale. Compare to your calculated weight (L×W×T×7.85). If the measured weight is more than 2.5% below calculated, the sheet is potentially under-thickness. This catches Z180-type substitution or under-gauge material before the full bundle enters fabrication.
Some steel suppliers in India quote MS sheets by piece or by "number of sheets" — always convert to per-tonne pricing before comparing quotations. A supplier quoting ₹4,200 per 2500×1250×3mm sheet appears cheaper than ₹58,000/tonne at first glance, but 2.5×1.25×3×7.85 = 73.6 kg × ₹58,000/1000 = ₹4,268 — actually cheaper at ₹58,000/tonne.
For fabrication projects, prepare a material Bill of Quantity (BOQ) with all sheet items listed as: Size × Qty × kg/sheet = total kg. Sum all sizes for total MS procurement weight in kg → convert to tonnes → add waste % → get final purchase order weight. This prevents both under-ordering (production stoppages) and over-ordering (blocked capital).
Standard Indian flatbed trucks: 14-ft vehicle = 5 tonne payload; 20-ft vehicle = 7.5 tonne; 22-ft vehicle = 10 tonne; 32-ft trailer = 15–20 tonne. Calculate total MS sheet weight before booking transport — overloaded vehicles attract RTO fines and delay delivery. The multi-thickness calculator on this page helps plan total load quickly.
