Six simple steps to estimate brass sheet weight accurately for any Indian project or procurement
Select Millimetres (mm) for metric dimensions from a drawing or supplier datasheet. Choose Feet & Inches if your brass sheet supplier quotes in feet — common in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata brass markets.
Type the sheet length and width. Standard brass sheet sizes in India are 2440×1220 mm (8×4 ft) and 1000×2000 mm. Smaller cut pieces from 500×500 mm are also common in the trade.
Enter thickness in mm. Common brass sheet thicknesses in India range from 0.5 mm to 12 mm per IS 410:2001 (BIS standard for brass strip, sheet and plate).
Enter the number of sheets needed. The estimator multiplies per-sheet weight by quantity to give instant total weight for procurement planning and freight calculation.
Each brass grade has a different Cu/Zn ratio and density. CZ 108 (65/35 Yellow Brass, 8.80 g/cm³) is the most common in India. Use Custom Density for non-listed alloys or if your MTC specifies a different value.
Results update live — kg per sheet, total kg, kg/m², total tonnes and lbs are all shown instantly. Use kg/m² to cross-check against your supplier's mill test certificate and rate card.
Understand exactly how brass sheet weight is calculated — step by step
Length and width in mm are divided by 1,000,000 (1000×1000) to convert mm² to m². This gives the face area of one sheet — the base for all weight calculations.
Multiplying thickness (mm) by density (g/cm³) gives kg/m² directly. This is because 1 mm × 1 g/cm³ = 1 kg/m² — the conversion factor is exactly 1, making the calculation clean and fast.
When feet are selected, the estimator converts to mm first using 1 ft = 304.8 mm. An 8×4 ft sheet = 2438.4 × 1219.2 mm ≈ standard 2440×1220 mm — the same formula then applies.
Standard 8×4 ft sheet (2440×1220 mm), 3 mm thick, CZ 108 Yellow Brass (8.80 g/cm³):
Area = 2440×1220÷1,000,000 = 2.977 m²
kg/m² = 3 × 8.80 = 26.40
Weight = 2.977 × 26.40 = ≈ 78.59 kg

Key industries and real-world applications where accurate brass sheet weight estimation is critical
Brass sheet (CZ 108) is stamped into terminals, busbars, connectors and switchgear components across India's electrical manufacturing belt in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Weight determines material cost at ₹/kg.
India is one of the world's largest producers of brass plumbing fittings (Jamnagar cluster, Gujarat). Brass sheet is used for valve bodies, tap discs, and sanitary hardware — weight estimation drives raw material procurement planning.
Brass sheet (CZ 106 Cartridge Brass for its formability) is used by instrument manufacturers in Miraj (Maharashtra) and other centres for making harmoniums, tabla fittings, cymbals and wind instrument bodies.
Etched and polished brass sheet is widely used in Indian architecture for temple doors, decorative panels, lift interiors, hotel lobby accents and heritage renovation projects. Precise weight is needed for structural attachment design.
Brass is significantly heavier than aluminium and even steel sheet for the same area. Accurate total weight estimation is essential for road freight cost calculation, especially for bulk shipments from Gujarat to pan-India buyers.
Brass is priced per kg on MCX and Indian markets (₹620–780/kg for CZ 108 in 2026). Estimating exact sheet weight from dimensions allows accurate material cost budgeting for project tenders, quotations and purchase orders.
Best practices used by brass traders, fabricators and procurement teams across India
Brass (CZ 108, 8.80 g/cm³) is 3.26× heavier than aluminium (2.70 g/cm³). A 2 mm brass sheet weighs 17.60 kg/m² vs 5.40 kg/m² for aluminium. Always check structural capacity before specifying thick brass sheet for ceilings or wall panels.
CZ 106 (70/30) and CZ 108 (65/35) look identical but have different densities and mechanical properties. Always verify the IS 410 grade designation on the mill test certificate — particularly when ordering for deep-drawing or electrical applications.
Brass sheet fabrication typically generates 10–15% scrap from cutting, blanking and forming. Add this allowance when placing material purchase orders — brass scrap has good resale value (₹400–500/kg in 2026) but planning for it upfront avoids production stoppages.
IS 410 allows thickness tolerance of ±0.05 mm for sheets up to 1 mm and ±5% for thicker sheets. For precision weight-critical applications (e.g., munitions or instrument manufacturing), specify tighter tolerances explicitly on your purchase order.
Brass sheet is supplied in O (annealed), H (hard), and ½H (half hard) tempers. Temper affects bendability and spring-back — not density or weight. Use annealed (O) for deep drawing, half-hard for general fabrication, hard for springs and contacts.
Jamnagar (Gujarat) is India's largest brass processing cluster — supplying 70%+ of India's brass components and sheet. Buying directly from Jamnagar-based mills or their authorised distributors typically gives 8–15% better rates than secondary market. Compare with MCX brass prices before negotiating. See the Aluminium Weight Calculator if considering material substitution.
