How to calculate sheet weight in kg for any material using length, width and thickness
Universal Sheet Weight Formula
Simplified for each material — dimensions in mm (÷ 1,000,000,000 × density)
Per-Material Multiplier (kg/m²/mm) — the Quick-Calculation Shortcut
Divide mm dimensions by 1,000. Keep thickness in mm — do not convert. 2500mm = 2.5m, 1250mm = 1.25m, 3mm stays as 3.
Weight (kg) = L(m) × W(m) × T(mm) × constant. For MS: constant = 7.85. For SS 304: 7.93. For Aluminium: 2.70. For Copper: 8.94.
Total weight = per-sheet weight × number of sheets. Convert to tonnes ÷ 1000. For procurement, always express total weight in tonnes — not individual sheet kg.
Cost (₹) = Tonnes × ₹/tonne rate. Add GST @18% and freight for final landed cost. Use the rate input in the calculator for instant cost estimate.
Which sheet material is used for which application in Indian construction, manufacturing and fabrication
The most widely used sheet material in India — structural fabrication, tanks, doors, machine guards, vehicle bodies, enclosures, hoppers, formwork, and general-purpose fabrication. Available as HR (hot-rolled, 2mm+) and CR (cold-rolled, 0.4–3.15mm). Governed by IS 1730 (HR) and IS 513 (CR). Rate: ₹52,000–₹58,000/tonne April 2026.
Corrugated GI roofing is one of the highest-volume sheet products in India — used for industrial shed roofs, rural housing, storage structures, canopies, and wall cladding. Pre-galvanised GI sheet (IS 277 Z275/Z350) is also used for solar structures, HVAC ducting, and electrical enclosures. Rate: ₹60,000–₹72,000/tonne.
SS 304 sheet is standard for food processing equipment, commercial kitchens, hospital furniture, elevator cab interiors, and decorative architectural panels in India. SS 316 is used in pharmaceutical, chemical, and marine applications requiring higher corrosion resistance. Governed by IS 6911. Rate: ₹2,20,000–₹2,80,000/tonne.
Aluminium sheet (1100, 3003, 5052 series) is used for roofing and cladding (anodised/coated), vehicle body panels, signage, HVAC equipment, solar panel frames, marine applications, and food-grade containers in India. Density of 2,700 kg/m³ makes it less than one-third the weight of steel — ideal for weight-critical applications. Rate: ₹2,60,000–₹3,00,000/tonne.
Copper sheet is used for electrical busbars, transformer windings, roofing (heritage architecture), decorative architectural cladding, heat exchanger fins, and arts & crafts fabrication in India. At 8,940 kg/m³, copper is significantly heavier than steel and very expensive — used only where electrical conductivity or specific properties are required. Rate: ₹8,00,000–₹9,00,000/tonne.
Brass sheet (Cu-Zn alloy) is used for decorative hardware, name plates, locks, musical instruments, electrical terminals, and architectural trim in India. Density ~8,500 kg/m³. Available in 63/37, 70/30, and other compositions. Corrosion resistant, easily formed and engraved. Rate: ₹7,00,000–₹8,00,000/tonne.
Practical guidance for accurate sheet weight estimation and procurement
One number per material: MS = 7.85, GI = 7.90, SS 304 = 7.93, Al = 2.70, Cu = 8.94, Brass = 8.50. Apply: Weight (kg) = L(m) × W(m) × T(mm) × multiplier. These are kg/m²/mm values — memorising them lets you estimate any sheet weight mentally in seconds.
Always add cutting and processing waste to calculated sheet weight before ordering: Simple cuts: +3–5%. Punched/drilled parts: +5–8%. Complex pressed or laser-cut parts: +8–15%. Failure to add waste is the most common cause of material shortages mid-project in Indian fabrication shops.
Use the Compare Materials tab in the calculator above to instantly see how much lighter aluminium is vs steel for the same sheet size. A 2500×1250×3mm aluminium sheet weighs just 25.3 kg vs MS steel at 73.6 kg — 65% lighter. Factor in the per-tonne price difference to find the most cost-effective material for weight-sensitive applications like roofing and transport.
Steel suppliers in India quote by tonne for bulk orders. Always convert your sheet count to total weight in tonnes before requesting a quotation. Two suppliers quoting different sheet sizes at different per-sheet prices cannot be compared without converting to ₹/kg or ₹/tonne. The cost estimator in the calculator above does this automatically.
Standard payload capacities of Indian trucks: 14-ft LCV = 5 tonnes; 20-ft SXL = 7.5 tonnes; 22-ft MXL = 10 tonnes; 32-ft trailer = 15–20 tonnes. Calculate total sheet weight before booking transport to avoid overloading (RTO fines) or under-utilising vehicle capacity (wasted freight cost). The multi-thickness tab shows total weight at a glance for all sizes.
Under-gauge sheet is a common quality issue in India — especially for GI roofing, CR and SS sheets. Weigh 3 sheets from different bundle positions. Back-calculate thickness: T(mm) = Weight(kg) ÷ [L(m) × W(m) × Density/1000]. If back-calculated thickness is more than 5% below nominal, flag for supplier discussion before the bundle enters fabrication.
