IS 2062 MS Weight Formulas – India Standard

The universally used Indian fabrication formulas for MS weight calculation — derived from density = 7,850 kg/m³

MASTER FORMULA — Sheet & Plate Weight
Weight (kg) = L (m) × W (m) × T (mm) × 7.85
OR  |  Weight (kg) = [L (mm) × W (mm) × T (mm)] ÷ 1,000,000 × 7,850
The constant 7.85 in the simplified formula comes from expressing density as 7.85 kg/dm³, then mixing metres (length/width) with millimetres (thickness) in a way that cancels out to kg directly. This is the same constant used on every Indian steel weight chart, on IS 800 design tables and in every Indian fabrication shop's estimation sheet.
Round Bar
W = D² × L × 0.006165
D = diameter (mm), L = length (m)
Constant = π/4 × 7850 ÷ 1,000,000
Square Bar
W = A² × L × 0.00785
A = side (mm), L = length (m)
Constant = 7850 ÷ 1,000,000
Flat Bar
W = W × T × L × 0.00785
W = width (mm), T = thickness (mm), L = length (m)
Hex Bar
W = AF² × L × 0.006798
AF = across flats (mm), L = length (m)
Constant = (√3/2) × 7850 ÷ 1,000,000
Weight per m²
W/m² = T (mm) × 7.85
T = thickness (mm)
Example: 6mm sheet = 47.1 kg/m²

IS 2062 Grades – All Use the Same Density

Grade differences in IS 2062:2011 affect mechanical strength only — density remains 7,850 kg/m³ across all grades

Key Fact: IS 2062 grade designations (E250, E350, E410, E450) refer to minimum yield strength in MPa. The differences are achieved through controlled carbon, manganese and microalloy (Nb, V, Ti) additions in amounts too small to measurably change steel density. Use 7,850 kg/m³ for all grade estimates without adjustment.

Watch out: Some estimators mistakenly apply different densities to high-strength grades, thinking "denser steel = stronger steel." This is incorrect. Strength in steel is achieved through microstructure (grain refinement, precipitation hardening) — not by adding more mass. E450 is NOT denser than E250. Both weigh 7,850 kg/m³.

Biggest risk: Using MS density (7.85) for aluminium (actual 2.70) gives a weight estimate 2.9× too high — a 100 kg aluminium sheet is quoted as 290 kg. Conversely, using MS density for copper gives 14% less weight than actual, causing under-quoting on copper bus bar jobs. Always select the correct material before calculating.

Worked Examples – IS 2062 MS Weight Calculation India

Step-by-step calculations for the most common Indian fabrication weight estimation scenarios

1

MS Sheet: 2500×1250×6 mm

L=2.5m, W=1.25m, T=6mm, Density=7.85

W = 2.5 × 1.25 × 6 × 7.85
= 2.5 × 1.25 = 3.125 m²
= 3.125 × 6 = 18.75
= 18.75 × 7.85 = 147.2 kg

At ₹75/kg (IS 2062 E250 HR MS, Apr 2026):
≈ ₹11,040 per sheet

2

MS Plate: 3000×1500×12 mm

L=3.0m, W=1.5m, T=12mm

W = 3.0 × 1.5 × 12 × 7.85
= 3.0 × 1.5 = 4.5 m²
= 4.5 × 12 = 54
= 54 × 7.85 = 423.9 kg

50 plates per order:
= 50 × 423.9 = 21,195 kg ≈ 21.2 MT

3

Round Bar: 50 mm Dia × 6 m

D=50mm, L=6m

W = D² × L × 0.006165
= 50² × 6 × 0.006165
= 2500 × 6 × 0.006165
= 15,000 × 0.006165
= 92.5 kg per bar

100 bars = 9,247 kg ≈ 9.25 MT

4

Flat Bar: 75×10 mm × 6 m

W=75mm, T=10mm, L=6m

W = 75 × 10 × 6 × 0.00785
= 75 × 10 = 750 mm²
= 750 × 6 = 4,500
= 4,500 × 0.00785
= 35.3 kg per bar

Per metre: 75 × 10 × 0.00785 = 5.89 kg/m

5

Weight per m² — Any Thickness

Formula: T (mm) × 7.85 = kg/m²

2 mm sheet: 2 × 7.85 = 15.70 kg/m²
4 mm sheet: 4 × 7.85 = 31.40 kg/m²
6 mm sheet: 6 × 7.85 = 47.10 kg/m²
10 mm plate: 10 × 7.85 = 78.50 kg/m²
20 mm plate: 20 × 7.85 = 157.0 kg/m²

6

Procurement Estimate with Tolerance

Theoretical weight: 5,000 kg
IS 1079 tolerance: −8% on 6mm HR

Min delivery weight: 5000 × 0.92 = 4,600 kg

Add 5% ordering buffer:
Order = 5,000 ÷ 0.95 = 5,263 kg

Always over-order by ~5% to account for IS thickness tolerance and handling scrap.

Estimating Tips – IS 2062 MS Weight Calculations India

One Density for All IS 2062 Grades

Never look up a different density value for E250 vs E350 vs E410. They are all 7,850 kg/m³. Set this as a fixed constant in all your Excel BOM templates, estimation sheets and ERP items. The only time you change density is when you change material — from MS to SS, aluminium or another metal.

Use Actual Thickness from MTC — Not Nominal

IS 1079 (HR) allows ±8% thickness tolerance at 6 mm. If you order 6 mm MS and receive material at the IS minimum (5.52 mm actual), your theoretical weight is 8% wrong. For large procurement orders, always request the MTC and recalculate using the actual coil thickness stated — not the nominal ordered thickness.

Add 5% Procurement Buffer

When ordering IS 2062 MS based on theoretical weight, add a 5% buffer to account for: IS thickness tolerance (up to −8%), cutting kerf losses (0.5–2%), handling damage and handling scrap. For plasma or oxy-fuel cut jobs, add 8–10% for wider kerf and edge dressing. For laser cut jobs with good nesting, 3% may be sufficient.

Use kg/m² for Fast Estimates

The fastest mental estimate for MS sheet weight is T (mm) × 7.85 = kg/m². Memorise key values: 2mm=15.7, 4mm=31.4, 6mm=47.1, 8mm=62.8, 10mm=78.5. Then multiply by sheet area in m². A 2.5×1.25m sheet is exactly 3.125 m² — multiply by your kg/m² for instant result, no calculator needed.

Theoretical vs Weighbridge Weight

For large orders (5 MT+), always weigh incoming material on a calibrated weighbridge and compare to your theoretical calculation. A systematic shortfall of 5–8% on every delivery from a particular supplier indicates they are consistently supplying at the IS tolerance minimum — legal, but worth discussing and accounting for in your PO pricing.

Do NOT Use 7.85 for These Materials

Never apply the MS constant to: SS 304 (use 7.93), SS 316 (use 7.98), SS 202 (use 7.75), Aluminium (use 2.70 — you'll be 190% over!), Copper (use 8.96), Cast Iron (use 7.20). Check the material before touching the calculator — material density is the most common single cause of weight calculation errors in Indian multi-material fabrication estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions – IS 2062 Density India

What is the density of IS 2062 steel in kg/m³?
The density of IS 2062 mild steel is 7,850 kg/m³ (7.85 g/cm³). This applies to all IS 2062 grades — E250, E350, E410 and E450 — as well as all related mild and low-alloy structural steel products including IS 1079 (HR sheets), IS 513 (CRCA), IS 808 (structural sections), IS 2062 plates and IS 1786 TMT bars. This is the value used in IS 800:2007 structural steel design code for all steel weight calculations.
Is the density different for IS 2062 E250 vs E350 vs E410?
No — all IS 2062 grades have the same density of 7,850 kg/m³. The grade number (E250, E350, E410) indicates the minimum yield strength in MPa, which is achieved through controlled carbon, manganese and microalloying without changing the material's mass per unit volume. Higher-strength grades are not "heavier" than lower-strength grades. Use a single density constant of 7.85 for all IS 2062 grade estimates.
What is the standard Indian formula for MS sheet weight calculation?
The standard Indian formula is: Weight (kg) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × 7.85. The constant 7.85 incorporates the density and unit conversion. For quick per-m² estimates: Weight per m² = Thickness (mm) × 7.85. Key values to memorise: 2mm=15.70 kg/m², 4mm=31.40, 6mm=47.10, 8mm=62.80, 10mm=78.50. For a standard 2500×1250 mm sheet, area = 3.125 m² — multiply by the kg/m² for your thickness.
How many IS 2062 6mm MS sheets in one metric tonne?
For standard 2500×1250 mm sheets at 6 mm thickness:

Weight per sheet = 2.5 × 1.25 × 6 × 7.85 = 147.2 kg
Sheets per MT = 1000 ÷ 147.2 = 6.8 sheets per tonne

For 2438×1219 mm (8×4 ft) sheets: weight = 2.438 × 1.219 × 6 × 7.85 = 139.8 kg → 7.2 sheets per tonne. These are theoretical weights based on nominal 6 mm thickness — actual delivery weight may vary by ±8% per IS 1079 tolerance.
Why does IS 800:2007 use 7,850 kg/m³ and not 7,860 or 7,900?
IS 800:2007 (General Construction in Steel) adopts 7,850 kg/m³ as the standard density for structural steel, consistent with EN 1993 (Eurocode 3) and most international structural steel standards. While the "true" density of iron is 7,874 kg/m³, real steel has small amounts of carbon, manganese, silicon and other alloying elements that slightly reduce the density below pure iron. The value 7,850 represents the internationally agreed consensus for plain carbon and low-alloy structural steels — it is not an approximation but a defined standard value. Some references use 7,860 or 7,870 — the difference to 7,850 is less than 0.3% and negligible for all practical estimation purposes.
