Select RHS or SHS, enter dimensions including corner radius, choose material and get weight in kg/m and total kg instantly.
Visual reference showing key dimensions — D (depth), B (width), t (wall thickness) and R (outer corner radius)
Corner radius R is the outer radius at each corner. Inner corner radius ri = R − t. The corner radius reduces the cross-sectional area compared to a sharp-corner hollow section.
Simple steps to get accurate hollow section weight with corner radius as per IS 4923
Select RHS for rectangular hollow sections (depth ≠ width) or SHS for square hollow sections (depth = width). In SHS mode, only one side dimension is needed.
Enter Depth (D), Width (B) and Wall Thickness (t) in millimetres. For standard IS 4923 sections, refer to the reference table below for exact dimensions available from Indian mills.
Enter the outer corner radius (R) in mm. For IS 4923 standard sections, R = 2t is the typical value. If unknown, use R = 2 × wall thickness as a default — the calculator computes ri = R − t automatically.
Enter length in metres and number of pieces. Standard IS 4923 hollow sections in India are supplied in 6 m and 12 m lengths. Custom cut lengths are available from stockists.
Choose IS 4923 grade or other material. All three IS 4923 yield grades (YSt 210, YSt 240, YSt 310) share the same density of 7.85 g/cm³, so weight is identical — grade only affects strength.
Results show kg/m (to compare with IS 4923 datasheet), weight per section, total kg, metric tonnes, and the actual cross-section area after corner radius deduction for structural design use.
Exact calculation method used in this calculator — matches IS 4923 published values
A real hollow section has rounded corners, not sharp right angles. The area at each corner is less than a full rectangle. The term (4 − π) × ri² subtracts exactly the four corner differences between a square corner and a circular arc — this is the standard IS 4923 correction.
Without corner radius deduction, cross-section area = 2t(B + D − 2t). With the IS 4923 corner correction, the area is slightly lower. For a 100×50×4 mm RHS with R = 8 mm (ri = 4 mm), the corner correction ≈ 13.7 mm² — about 1.5% of the total area.
Area in mm² × density in g/cm³ ÷ 1000 gives kg/m. This works because 1 mm² × 1 m = 1000 mm³ = 1 cm³, and 1 cm³ × density (g/cm³) = weight in grams ÷ 1000 = kg. The net divisor is 1000.
As per IS 4923:1997, the standard outer corner radius for hot-formed hollow sections is R = 2t (inner ri = t). For cold-formed sections, R = 3t is common. Always verify from the manufacturer's section property table before using in structural design.

Standard density values used for hollow section weight calculation in Indian industry
Key industries and applications that rely on IS 4923 hollow sections across India
IS 4923 RHS and SHS sections are widely used for industrial sheds, mezzanine floors, and equipment platforms across manufacturing hubs in Pune, Ahmedabad and Chennai.
SHS 25×25, 40×40 and 50×50 are the most popular sizes for residential and commercial gate fabrication in India. APL Apollo and Tata Structura sections dominate this market.
RHS sections serve as waler beams and soldier piles in deep excavation formwork systems used in metro rail, flyover and high-rise construction projects across Indian cities.
India's booming solar sector uses RHS and SHS sections extensively for ground-mounted and rooftop solar panel frames. Weight accuracy is critical for foundation and wind load design.
RHS sections are used for truck body frames, container sub-frames and tipping body structures. Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and Mahindra specify IS 4923 hollow sections for chassis components.
PEB (Pre-Engineered Building) manufacturers in India use SHS and RHS for purlins, bracing and secondary structural members. Accurate weight estimation is essential for competitive PEB project quotations.
Best practices followed by Indian structural engineers, fabricators and procurement teams
Using R = 0 (sharp corners) overestimates section weight by up to 2% for thin-walled sections. For IS 4923 compliance, always use R = 2t as the default outer corner radius. Verify from APL Apollo, Tata Structura or SAIL catalogue for the exact section you are ordering.
IS 4923 covers hot-formed (R ≈ 2t) hollow sections. Cold-formed sections per IS 1161 have larger corner radii (R ≈ 3t) and slightly different section properties. Using the wrong corner radius leads to inaccurate weight and section modulus values in structural design.
IS 4923 allows ±2.5% weight tolerance. For procurement planning and freight cost estimation, add a 3% buffer to the calculated weight. For critical structural weight calculations, request the actual section weight from the mill test report (MTR).
Cross-check your calculated kg/m against the supplier's published section property table. Major Indian brands like APL Apollo and Tata Structura publish downloadable section weight tables that include corner radius deduction per IS 4923.
Hot dip galvanising adds approximately 0.5–0.7 kg/m² of surface area. For hollow sections used in outdoor Indian applications (solar structures, gates, rural sheds), always add galvanising weight separately to the bare section weight calculated here.
Indian hollow section steel is traded per metric tonne (MT). The calculator outputs total MT directly. In 2026, IS 4923 hollow sections are priced approximately ₹65,000–₹80,000 per MT ex-Mumbai depending on grade, size and quantity — always get a fresh quote from your local stockist.
