Metal Cost Formula & Worked Examples

How to calculate metal material cost manually using weight and rate per kg — with and without GST

Base Cost (₹) = Weight (kg) × Rate (₹/kg) × Quantity
Gross Weight with Wastage (kg) = Net Weight × (1 + Wastage% ÷ 100)
GST Amount (₹) = Base Cost × GST% ÷ 100
Total Cost (₹) = Base Cost + GST Amount + Misc. / Transport Charges
Steel GST in India = 18% | Non-ferrous (Al, Cu, Brass) = 18% | Some SS products = 18% | Always verify current GST rate for your specific product/HSN code
EXAMPLE 1 – MS Plate Order

Simple Weight × Rate

Weight: 850 kg
Rate: ₹60/kg (IS 2062 E250)
Wastage: 5%
GST: 18%

Gross weight = 850 × 1.05 = 892.5 kg
Base cost = 892.5 × 60 = ₹53,550
GST = 53,550 × 18% = ₹9,639
Total = ₹63,189

EXAMPLE 2 – SS 304 Sheet

High-Value Metal Cost

Weight: 120 kg
Rate: ₹250/kg (SS 304 sheet)
Qty: 3 lots
Wastage: 8%
GST: 18%

Gross wt = 120 × 1.08 × 3 = 388.8 kg
Base = 388.8 × 250 = ₹97,200
GST = ₹17,496
Total = ₹1,14,696

EXAMPLE 3 – Multi-Metal Project

BOM Project Estimation

ISMB 300: 2,200 kg × ₹63 = ₹1,38,600
ISMC 200: 850 kg × ₹62 = ₹52,700
MS Plate: 1,100 kg × ₹60 = ₹66,000
GI Sheet Z275: 600 kg × ₹76 = ₹45,600

Net material = ₹3,02,900
+ 18% GST = ₹54,522
+ Transport = ₹12,000
Grand Total = ₹3,69,422

EXAMPLE 4 – Copper Bus Bar

Non-Ferrous High Rate

Copper bus bar: 35 kg
Rate: ₹800/kg
Wastage: 3%
GST: 18%

Gross wt = 35 × 1.03 = 36.05 kg
Base = 36.05 × 800 = ₹28,840
GST = ₹5,191
Total = ₹34,031

How to Use This Metal Cost Estimator

Step-by-step guide to getting accurate material cost estimates for your project

Step 1 – Find Your Weight

Use our Sheet Weight Calculator, Pipe Weight Calculator, Beam Weight Calculator, or Channel Calculator to calculate the total kg for each section. Enter that weight into this estimator.

Step 2 – Enter Rate Per Kg

Select the metal type from the dropdown to auto-fill an indicative rate, or enter a custom ₹/kg rate from your supplier quote. Always use the actual supplier quote for final project budgeting — use the indicative rates only for preliminary estimates.

Step 3 – Add Wastage %

Select a wastage percentage based on your job type. 5% is recommended for standard fabrication with normal cutting. Use 8–10% for jobs with many short pieces, complex shapes, or first-time setups. Wastage adds to your gross procurement weight and total cost.

Step 4 – Apply GST

Select the applicable GST rate. Most structural steel, aluminium, copper, and stainless steel products attract 18% GST in India under HSN 7208–7326. If you are GST-registered with input tax credit (ITC), you can recover GST — the ex-GST base cost is your effective procurement cost.

Step 5 – Use Multi-Item BOM

Switch to the Multi-Item BOM tab for projects with multiple materials. Add each item (beam, channel, sheet, pipe, etc.) with its own weight and rate. The BOM estimator calculates individual item costs, applies overall wastage and GST, adds misc/transport charges, and gives a grand total.

Step 6 – Print / Share BOM

After calculating the multi-item BOM, use your browser's Print (Ctrl+P) to save the BOM summary as a PDF for sharing with clients, management, or for project records. The print view shows only the BOM table and totals — no calculator or navigation elements.

What Affects Metal Cost in India

Key factors that cause metal prices to vary across suppliers, cities, and timeframes in India

SAIL / TATA List Price
Monthly
Mill Price Revision
SAIL and TATA Steel revise their base list prices monthly. Most Indian stockist prices follow within 1–2 weeks. A ₹2,000–₹5,000/MT revision in list price changes retail ₹/kg by ₹2–5.
Quantity Ordered
5–10%
Volume Discount
Orders above 5 MT from a SAIL/TATA stockist attract 3–5% discount vs single-piece rate. Above 10 MT, direct mill purchase becomes possible with significant savings of ₹5–10/kg.
City / Location
±₹3–8
per kg
Steel prices vary by city due to freight from mills. Mumbai and Chennai (closer to ports) are often ₹3–5/kg cheaper than landlocked cities like Delhi or Ahmedabad for the same section.
Primary vs Secondary
10–20%
Price Difference
Secondary (re-rolled, non-IS marked) steel is 10–20% cheaper than primary IS-certified material. For structural applications, always use IS-certified primary material — secondary steel carries risk of substandard properties.
LME / International Price
Weekly
Non-Ferrous Driver
Copper, aluminium, and brass prices in India track LME (London Metal Exchange) prices closely. A 5% LME movement typically causes a 4–5% movement in Indian non-ferrous retail prices within 2 weeks.
GST + Transport
18%+
Total Landed Cost
For Indian projects, always budget: ex-stockist rate + 18% GST + ₹500–₹2,000/MT freight (within city) + unloading charges. Total landed cost is typically 22–25% above the quoted ex-stockist base rate.

Pro Tips for Accurate Metal Cost Estimation in India

Practical advice for fabricators, project managers, and procurement teams building material budgets

Always Use Fresh Supplier Quotes

Steel prices in India change weekly. Copper and SS can change daily. Any BOM built more than 2 weeks ago may have rate errors of 5–10%. For projects above ₹5 lakh in metal value, always refresh your ₹/kg rates from your actual supplier before finalising the project quote to client or management.

Understand GST Input Tax Credit (ITC)

If your firm is GST-registered and uses metal for taxable outputs, the 18% GST you pay on metal purchase is fully recoverable as input tax credit (ITC). For internal project cost comparison, use the ex-GST base cost — not the GST-inclusive price — as your true material cost when comparing bids from different vendors.

Include Freight and Handling in BOM

Use the Misc. / Transport field in the Multi-Item BOM to capture freight cost. For within-city delivery in India, budget ₹800–₹2,000 per MT for structural steel. For inter-state movement, add ₹1,500–₹4,000 per MT depending on distance and vehicle size. These charges are often overlooked in initial estimates.

Use the Right Wastage Percentage

Standard shop wastage for Indian fabrication: 3–5% for simple rectangular cuts from sheet/plate; 5–8% for profiled parts, beam assembly, and channel fabrication; 8–12% for tube/pipe bending, complex layouts, and prototype fabrication. Under-estimating wastage is one of the most common causes of project budget overrun in Indian steel fabrication.

Build a BOM Before Procurement

For any project above ₹2 lakh in material value, always prepare a full Bill of Materials (BOM) listing each item, weight, and rate before purchasing. The Multi-Item BOM above can serve as your working procurement document. A proper BOM prevents over-ordering, missed items, and post-project reconciliation disputes with clients.

Negotiate Rate Validity with Supplier

For large orders placed 2–4 weeks before fabrication starts, ask your supplier for a rate validity period of 15–30 days. Most Indian structural steel stockists will honour a quoted rate for 2 weeks on written purchase orders. This protects your project margin from intervening SAIL/TATA list price increases between order placement and delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about metal cost calculation and procurement pricing in India

What is the current price of MS steel per kg in India 2026?
Indicative MS structural steel prices in India as of April 2026: MS Plate / Sheet (IS 2062 E250): ₹55–₹62/kg; MS Round Bar: ₹58–₹65/kg; ISMC Channel: ₹60–₹68/kg; ISMB Beam: ₹60–₹68/kg; MS Pipe ERW: ₹62–₹70/kg — all ex-stockist, excluding 18% GST. Prices vary by city (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai each differ by ₹3–5/kg) and by quantity ordered. Steel prices revise monthly with SAIL/TATA list price changes. Always get a fresh quote from your local authorised stockist for accurate project budgeting.
What GST rate applies to steel and metal purchases in India?
18% GST applies to most structural steel products in India under HSN Chapter 72 and 73 — including MS plates, sheets, beams, channels, angles, pipes, tubes, and hollow sections. Stainless steel, aluminium, copper, and brass also attract 18% GST in most product forms. Some specific categories (like certain agricultural pipes) may attract lower rates. If you are a GST-registered buyer using metal for taxable outputs, the full 18% GST paid is recoverable as Input Tax Credit (ITC) — making your effective cost the ex-GST rate.
How much wastage should I add when ordering steel in India?
Standard wastage allowances for Indian structural steel fabrication: 3–5% for simple rectangular sheet or plate cutting; 5–8% for beam/channel assembly, structural framing, and purlin fabrication; 8–12% for complex profiles, tube bending, laser-cut parts, and first-article fabrication. For most general Indian fabrication shops, 5% wastage is the standard default. Under-estimating wastage is one of the most common causes of project material shortfall and emergency re-ordering at spot rates.
What is the price of SS 304 and SS 316 steel per kg in India 2026?
Indicative stainless steel prices in India as of April 2026: SS 304 Sheet: ₹230–₹270/kg (ex-GST); SS 304L Sheet: ₹240–₹280/kg; SS 316 Sheet: ₹300–₹350/kg; SS 316L Sheet: ₹310–₹360/kg. SS prices fluctuate significantly with international nickel and chrome prices on LME — rates can move ±₹20–50/kg within a single month. Always get a live quote from Mumbai (JNPT area), Chennai, or your local SS stockist. The SS 304 vs SS 316 price difference is approximately ₹70–₹80/kg due to the molybdenum content in SS 316.
What is the price of aluminium, copper, and brass per kg in India 2026?
Indicative non-ferrous metal prices in India as of April 2026: Aluminium Sheet (1100/3003): ₹200–₹240/kg; Copper Sheet (ETP): ₹740–₹820/kg; Copper Pipe: ₹750–₹840/kg; Brass Sheet: ₹590–₹650/kg; Brass Round Bar: ₹600–₹660/kg — all ex-GST. Non-ferrous prices track LME international exchange rates and change weekly. For large copper or brass purchases, always get a same-day quote from your supplier as prices may differ significantly from week-old estimates.
How do I estimate the total cost of a steel fabrication project in India?
For a full steel fabrication project cost estimate in India, follow these steps: (1) Use our weight calculators to find kg for each section (beam, channel, plate, pipe, etc.); (2) Enter each item into the Multi-Item BOM tab above with its ₹/kg rate; (3) Add 5–8% wastage and 18% GST; (4) Add transport (₹800–2,000/MT), cutting charges (₹2,000–5,000/MT), surface treatment (primer: ₹15–25/m², painting: ₹40–80/m²), and fabrication labour; (5) Add 10–15% contractor margin for quoted work. The BOM calculator handles material cost — add other charges as a separate Misc. line.
What is the difference between ex-stockist price and landed cost for steel in India?
Ex-stockist price is the price at the supplier's godown — before GST, freight, and unloading. Landed cost is the total cost at your project site or workshop. Typical add-ons in India: +18% GST (if not ITC-claimable); +₹500–2,000/MT freight (within same city); +₹200–500/MT unloading; +₹500–2,000/MT cutting to length (if ordered cut). Total landed cost is typically 22–28% above the ex-stockist rate for non-ITC buyers in India. For ITC-registered buyers, effective landed cost is approximately 5–10% above ex-stockist (freight + handling only, since GST is recovered).
