Common Questions

My weight calculation doesn’t match the supplier’s figure — why?
Our calculators use nominal dimensions and standard density values. Actual weights vary due to mill tolerances (typically ±5–10% for sheets), actual alloy composition, and surface coating weight. Always verify with the mill certificate or an actual weighbridge measurement for procurement.

Which gauge standard does your converter use for steel?
For mild steel sheet, we use the US Manufacturers’ Standard Gauge (MSG). For stainless steel, US Standard Gauge values. For aluminium, Brown & Sharpe (B&S / AWG). For copper and brass, Brown & Sharpe. For wire products, BWG and SWG. Each converter page clearly states the standard applied.

Can I use your weight estimates for structural engineering?
Our tools can be used for initial estimates and planning. For load-bearing structural design, certified engineering calculations using actual material certifications and applicable design codes (AISC, IS 800, Eurocode) are required. Do not use our tools as the sole basis for structural design without professional engineering review.

Can you add a calculator for a specific metal section?
Yes — email us at admin@sheetgauge.com with the section type, standard reference (e.g., IS 808, ASTM A36), and dimensional data. We add most requested sections within 1–2 weeks.
