Editorial Policy
Editorial Policy for sheetgauge.com/. How we source gauge data, density values, and thickness standards — ASTM, ISO, IS 808, BS EN and DIN only.
Our Mission
sheetgauge.com/ exists to give fabricators, engineers, buyers, and students instant access to accurate sheet metal calculations and reference data — for free.
Standard-Based Data
All gauge tables, density values, and thickness standards are sourced from published ASTM, ISO, IS, BS, and DIN standards — never from informal sources.
Kept Current
When standards are revised or new editions published, we review and update our data. All pages show a last-reviewed date.
Always Free
All 60+ tools and charts remain free forever. Funded by advertising, not paywalls.
Industry Focused
Written for people who work with metal — practical, to the point, with real workshop examples.
How We Build Calculators
- Source the published standard: ASTM, ISO, IS 808, BS EN, DIN standards for section dimensions; standard density tables for material properties
- Implement the formula: Weight = Volume × Density. All computation in browser JavaScript — no input data transmitted to servers
- Validate against published data: Test results against weight tables in steel manufacturer handbooks (Tata Steel, SAIL, ArcelorMittal) and standard reference books
- Document density values used: Clearly state which density value is applied (e.g., steel = 7850 kg/m³, aluminium 6061 = 2700 kg/m³)
- State limitations: Nominal vs actual, tolerance bands, coating allowances
Sources We Use
| Source | Used For |
|---|---|
| ASTM A480 / A568 | Steel sheet thickness tolerances and gauge tables |
| ASTM B209 | Aluminium sheet and plate gauge/thickness data |
| IS 808 | Indian Standard structural section dimensions (ISMC, ISMB) |
| BS EN 10051 / EN 10025 | European steel strip and structural section standards |
| ISO 16162 | Metallic sheet gauge standards |
| Manufacturer handbooks | Tata Steel, SAIL, ArcelorMittal section weight tables for cross-validation |
| ASM Materials Handbook | Reference density values for all metals and alloys |
