6

Check Thumb Rule

Quick mental estimate: MS round bar kg/m = D² × 0.006165 where D is diameter in mm. Example: 25 mm bar = 25² × 0.006165 = 625 × 0.006165 = 3.85 kg/m. This formula is used by Indian steel traders daily for fast quotation.

Round Bar Weight Formula – Full Derivation

Step-by-step calculation method used by Indian structural engineers and quantity surveyors

Cross-Section Area (mm²) = π ÷ 4 × D² = 0.7854 × D²
Weight per Metre (kg/m) = Area (mm²) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1000
Weight per Metre (kg/m) = 0.7854 × D² × Density ÷ 1000
For MS (density 7.85):   kg/m = D² × 0.006165   (D in mm)
Weight per Bar (kg) = kg/m × Length (m)
Total Weight (kg) = Weight per Bar × Quantity  |  MT = Total kg ÷ 1000
π ≈ 3.14159  |  π÷4 = 0.7854  |  0.7854 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 0.006165 — the famous MS round bar constant
THE CONSTANT 0.006165

MS Round Bar Thumb Rule

The constant 0.006165 comes from π/4 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 0.7854 × 7.85 ÷ 1000. This gives kg/m directly from D² in mm². Every Indian steel trader and fabricator knows: kg/m = D² × 0.006165. For SS 304: D² × 0.006229. For Aluminium: D² × 0.002120. For Copper: D² × 0.007037.

UNIT CONVERSION

Why Divide by 1000?

Area in mm² × length in mm = volume in mm³. Density is in g/cm³ = g per 1000 mm³. So mm³ ÷ 1000 = cm³, × density = grams, ÷ 1000 = kg. For kg/m: area mm² × 1000 (mm per metre) × density ÷ 1,000,000 = kg/m, which simplifies to area mm² × density ÷ 1000 = kg/m.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1

MS 32 mm dia, 6 m, Qty 100

Area = 0.7854 × 32² = 0.7854 × 1024 = 804.25 mm²
kg/m = 804.25 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 6.31 kg/m
Per bar = 6.31 × 6 = 37.87 kg
Total = 37.87 × 100 = 3,787 kg = 3.787 MT
Quick check: 32² × 0.006165 = 1024 × 0.006165 = 6.31 ✓

WORKED EXAMPLE 2

SS 304 50 mm dia, 3 m, Qty 20

Area = 0.7854 × 50² = 0.7854 × 2500 = 1963.5 mm²
kg/m = 1963.5 × 7.93 ÷ 1000 = 15.57 kg/m
Per bar = 15.57 × 3 = 46.71 kg
Total = 46.71 × 20 = 934.2 kg = 0.934 MT
Quick check: 50² × (7.93×0.7854÷1000) = 2500 × 0.006229 = 15.57 ✓

Applications of Round Bars in Indian Industry

Key sectors using MS, SS, alloy steel and non-ferrous round bars across India

Shafts & Axles

MS and alloy steel round bars (EN8, EN19, EN24) are machined into transmission shafts, drive axles, spindles and worm shafts for the Indian automotive, textile machinery and general engineering sectors. Sizes from 25 mm to 150 mm are most common.

Structural & RCC

Mild steel round bars are bent into stirrups, hoops and U-bolts and used as anchor bolts, anchor rods and base plate bolts in civil construction projects across India. IS 1732 bars are also used as connecting pins in structural steel connections per IS 800:2007.

SS Round Bar – Food & Pharma

SS 304 and SS 316 round bars are machined into agitator shafts, impellers, valve stems and conveyor shafts for the Indian food processing, dairy, pharmaceutical and chemical industries where corrosion resistance and hygiene compliance (FSSAI / GMP) are required.

Fasteners & Bolts

MS, alloy steel and SS round bars are the primary raw material for cold-heading and hot-forging fasteners — hex bolts, anchor bolts, studs and threaded rods. Major Indian fastener clusters in Rajkot, Ludhiana and Pune consume thousands of tonnes of IS 1732 round bar annually.

Forging & Press Tools

Large diameter MS and alloy steel bars (50 mm to 200 mm) are the starting stock for hot forging crankshafts, connecting rods, flanges and press tool components. Bharat Forge (Pune) and Kalyani Steels are major Indian consumers of round bar forging stock.

Automotive Components

Aluminium and brass round bars are CNC machined into fuel injection components, valve seats, bearing housings and electrical connectors for India's automotive supply chain (IATF 16949). EN8 and EN19 bars are the backbone of the Indian auto ancillary machining industry.

Pro Tips for Round Bar Weight Calculation – India

Best practices for Indian engineers, procurement teams and steel stockists

Memorise the MS Constant 0.006165

Every experienced Indian steel buyer knows: kg/m = D² × 0.006165 (D in mm). It is worth memorising for instant mental estimates during site visits and stockist negotiations. For quick approximation, use D² ÷ 162 (slightly less accurate but easier). Example: 50 mm bar ≈ 2500 ÷ 162 ≈ 15.4 kg/m vs exact 15.41 kg/m — close enough for budgeting.

IS 1732 Diameter Tolerance

IS 1732:1979 specifies diameter tolerances for hot rolled round bars: for diameters up to 25 mm the tolerance is ±0.4 mm; for 25–50 mm it is ±0.5 mm; for 50–80 mm it is ±0.6 mm. This means a nominal 25 mm bar can be 24.6–25.4 mm, causing up to ±3.2% variation in cross-section area and weight. For precision machining stock, always specify cold drawn (CD) bars which have tighter tolerances of ±0.1 mm.

Add Machining Allowance for Turned Parts

When ordering round bar for machined shafts or turned components, always add the machining stock to the finished diameter before calculating purchase weight. Standard allowance: +3 to 5 mm on diameter for rough turning + finishing. For a finished Ø50 mm shaft, order Ø56 mm bar (adds ~25% to weight and cost). Never order bar at finished size — always allow for turning stock and facing cuts.

Indian Round Bar Market Prices 2026

Approximate ex-Mumbai/Delhi 2026: IS 1732 MS round bar ₹60,000–₹70,000/MT; EN8/C45 bars ₹75,000–₹90,000/MT; EN19/42CrMo ₹95,000–₹1,10,000/MT; SS 304 round bar ₹2,10,000–₹2,40,000/MT; SS 316 bars ₹3,00,000–₹3,40,000/MT; Aluminium 6061 bars ₹2,50,000–₹2,80,000/MT. Prices change monthly — always confirm with stockist. SAIL, JSPL, Tata Steel and Mukand are primary Indian producers.

HR vs CD vs Bright Bar

Hot Rolled (HR) bars: rough surface, wide diameter tolerance, lowest cost — use for structural, forging and fabrication. Cold Drawn (CD) bars: smooth, tight tolerance (±0.1 mm), slightly higher strength than HR — use for precision machined parts without rough turning. Bright Bars: centreless ground to very tight tolerance (±0.05 mm) and h9/h11 surface finish — use for linear shafts, hydraulic components and precision fits in Indian machine tools.

Always Request MTC for Critical Applications

For automotive (IATF 16949), defence, pressure vessel and structural applications per IS 800:2007, always demand the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) from your bar supplier. The MTC confirms actual diameter, weight per metre, yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), percentage elongation and chemical composition — all mandatory for BIS-certified IS 1732 and IS 2062 supply chains in India.

Frequently Asked Questions – Round Bar Weight Calculator India

Common questions from Indian engineers, fabricators and steel traders answered

What is the weight of a 25 mm MS round bar per metre?
A 25 mm MS round bar weighs 3.85 kg/m. Calculation: Area = π/4 × 25² = 0.7854 × 625 = 490.87 mm². Weight = 490.87 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 3.85 kg/m. Using the thumb rule: 25² × 0.006165 = 625 × 0.006165 = 3.85 kg/m. For a standard 6 m bar this equals 23.09 kg per bar. For 12 m it equals 46.18 kg. Use the quick diameter picker above the calculator to instantly select 25 mm and get results for any length or quantity.
What is the formula for calculating round bar weight in India?
The standard formula used by Indian steel traders and engineers is: kg/m = D² × 0.006165 where D is diameter in mm (for MS/mild steel, density 7.85 g/cm³). Full derivation: kg/m = π/4 × D² × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 0.7854 × D² × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = D² × 0.006165. To get total weight: Total kg = kg/m × Length (m) × Quantity. For SS 304 use constant 0.006229, for aluminium use 0.002120. The calculator on this page performs all calculations automatically for any material.
What IS standard covers round bars in India?
Round bars for structural and general engineering use in India are covered under IS 1732:1979 (Dimensions for Round and Square Steel Bars for Structural and General Engineering Purposes). The standard specifies preferred diameters from 5 mm to 250 mm. Material quality for MS round bars is covered by IS 2062 (Hot Rolled Medium and High Tensile Structural Steel) in grades E250, E350 and E410. For stainless steel round bars, the relevant standard is IS 6911:1992. Bright bars and cold drawn bars are covered by IS 9550:1980. All standards are published by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).
What is the weight of a 50 mm round bar per metre for different materials?
At 50 mm diameter, cross-section area = π/4 × 50² = 1963.50 mm². Weight per metre by material:

• MS (7.85 g/cm³) = 15.41 kg/m
• SS 304 (7.93 g/cm³) = 15.57 kg/m
• SS 316 (7.98 g/cm³) = 15.67 kg/m
• SS 202 (7.75 g/cm³) = 15.22 kg/m
• Aluminium (2.70 g/cm³) = 5.30 kg/m
• Copper (8.96 g/cm³) = 17.61 kg/m
• Brass (8.94 g/cm³) = 17.57 kg/m

For a 6 m MS bar: 15.41 × 6 = 92.46 kg. The Alloy Steel & Others tab in the reference table above shows all these values pre-calculated.
How do I convert round bar diameter from inches to mm for calculation?
To convert inches to mm: multiply by 25.4. Common US/inch round bar sizes used in Indian import drawings:
1/4" = 6.35 mm  |  3/8" = 9.53 mm  |  1/2" = 12.70 mm  |  5/8" = 15.88 mm
3/4" = 19.05 mm  |  1" = 25.40 mm  |  1.25" = 31.75 mm  |  1.5" = 38.10 mm
2" = 50.80 mm  |  2.5" = 63.50 mm  |  3" = 76.20 mm  |  4" = 101.60 mm

Use the Inches unit toggle on the calculator above to enter diameter directly in inches — the calculator converts internally before computing weight.
How much does a 12-metre MS round bar weigh for common diameters?
12-metre MS round bar weights for common IS 1732 diameters:

10 mm = 7.40 kg  |  12 mm = 10.65 kg  |  16 mm = 18.94 kg  |  20 mm = 29.61 kg
25 mm = 46.18 kg  |  32 mm = 75.74 kg  |  40 mm = 118.34 kg  |  50 mm = 184.91 kg
60 mm = 266.35 kg  |  75 mm = 416.14 kg  |  100 mm = 739.84 kg

The full IS 1732 table with 6 m and 12 m weights is shown in the reference table above (MS Round Bar tab). For any other size, use the calculator — just enter diameter, set length to 12 m and quantity to 1.
