Instantly calculate the weight of MS, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and other metal plates in kg. Enter length, width and thickness — get results in seconds. Updated for India 2026.
Select your shape, fill in the dimensions, choose material and get instant weight in kg and tonnes.
Follow these simple steps to calculate MS plate weight in kg instantly
Select Rectangular / Square for flat cut plates or Circular / Round for disc-shaped plates. Most Indian market plates are rectangular.
Enter length, width (or diameter for circles) and thickness all in millimetres. Standard Indian plate sizes are 2500 × 1250 mm, 3000 × 1500 mm and 2000 × 1000 mm.
Enter the number of plates. This is useful for procurement planning — the calculator gives per-plate weight as well as total batch weight in both kg and metric tonnes (MT).
Choose your material from the dropdown. MS / IS 2062 E250 and E350 are the most common structural grades used in India. For custom alloys, enter your own density in g/cm³.
Hit the Calculate Plate Weight button. Results appear instantly — weight per plate, total kg, metric tonnes, kg per m² and total surface area.
Use kg/m² to cross-check with your steel supplier's mill test report. Use metric tonnes for freight, crane pick, and material cost calculations based on current Indian steel rates.
Understand exactly how MS and metal plate weight is calculated step by step
Multiply length × width × thickness (all in mm) to get volume in mm³. For circular plates, use π/4 × D² × thickness. One million mm³ equals one litre (1000 cm³).
Divide mm³ by 1,000 to get cm³. This step aligns the unit with density which is expressed in g/cm³ for all standard materials including IS 2062 steel.
Multiply cm³ by density (g/cm³) to get weight in grams. For MS / IS 2062, density = 7.85 g/cm³. Divide by 1000 to convert grams to kilograms (kg).
For MS plates, a quick thumb rule used widely in India: Weight (kg) = L(m) × W(m) × T(mm) × 7.85. This gives results within ±0.1% for standard IS 2062 grades.

Standard density values used for plate weight calculation across Indian industry
Density values are standard engineering references. Verify with mill test certificates for critical structural or pressure vessel applications as per BIS standards.
Industries and applications where accurate MS and metal plate weight data is essential
Steel fabricators across India use plate weight to estimate raw material cost, plan crane picks, and prepare quotations per tonne for IS 2062 structural jobs.
IS 2825 and IBR-compliant vessels require accurate plate weight for code calculations, nozzle load analysis, and transport weight certification by PESO India.
Mazagon Dock, Garden Reach and other Indian shipyards calculate plate weight for buoyancy, stability, and structural mass calculations on every ship section.
Road transport in India has strict axle load limits under the Motor Vehicles Act. Accurate plate weight is essential to keep truck payloads within legal limits.
Indian steel is traded per kg or per MT (metric tonne). Buyers and traders use plate weight to verify invoice quantities and calculate total cost at current Indian market rates.
Base plates, gusset plates, and connection plates used in Indian construction projects are specified and estimated using weight per piece for BOQ (bill of quantities) preparation.
Best practices followed by Indian fabricators, structural engineers and steel traders
BIS IS 1730 allows ±2.5% weight tolerance on hot rolled plates. Always add a 3–5% buffer when ordering steel to avoid shortfalls on site. Indian mills like SAIL and JSPL typically supply within this tolerance.
Hot rolled plates often have slight thickness variation across width. Measure with a vernier calliper or ultrasonic gauge at edges and centre. The average of 3–5 readings gives the most accurate input for weight calculation.
Plasma or gas cutting removes 2–4 mm of material per cut. For plates with multiple cut pieces, the total off-cuts can add 5–10% extra material requirement. Plan your nesting layout before ordering. See our Cutting Wastage Planning guide.
Epoxy primer (75–100 µm) adds approximately 0.15–0.20 kg/m². Zinc-rich primer or hot dip galvanising adds significantly more. For large projects, add coating weight separately to the bare plate weight from this calculator.
E250, E350 and E410 grades have the same density (7.85 g/cm³) but different yield strengths. Select the correct grade based on your design load — using E250 where E350 is required means using a thicker (and heavier) plate to meet the same load.
For large consignments above 5 MT, always verify at a certified weighbridge before final payment. NTPL and NPCIL-approved weighbridges are available at major Indian steel yards and ports for independent certification.
