How to Use the Channel Weight Calculator

Five straightforward steps for Indian engineers, quantity surveyors and fabricators

1

Choose Mode

Select Standard ISMC (IS 808) if your drawing specifies a standard ISMC designation — the calculator fills in all dimensions automatically from the IS 808 table. Select Custom C-Section to enter your own depth, flange and thickness values for non-standard or imported channels.

2

Select ISMC Size or Enter Dimensions

In Standard mode, choose from ISMC 75 to ISMC 400. The info box above the form shows all section dimensions and the IS 808 published kg/m for instant reference. In Custom mode, enter depth (d), flange width (b), web thickness (tw) and flange thickness (tf) all in mm.

3

Enter Length & Quantity

Type the piece length in metres (standard mill supply length is 6 m and 12 m) and the number of pieces. The calculator gives weight per piece, total weight in kg and total tonnes for freight and procurement planning.

4

Select Material

Default is MS Steel (IS 2062, 7.85 g/cm³) — the standard for ISMC supply in India. Switch to Stainless or Aluminium for specialty channels. Use Custom Density (Custom mode) for any other alloy.

5

Read Results

Six result boxes show kg/m, weight per piece, total kg, total tonnes, cross-section area and total length. Cross-check kg/m with the IS 808 reference table below to validate your inputs before submitting a BOQ or purchase order.

6

Add Wastage

Add 5–8% cutting wastage to total weight for procurement. Channels cut to shorter lengths from 6 m or 12 m standard bars generate off-cuts. Factor this into your material order quantity to avoid project stoppages.

C-Section Weight Calculation Formula

How cross-sectional area and weight per metre are calculated for a channel section

Cross-Section Area (mm²) = (d − 2×tf) × tw + 2 × (b × tf)
Weight per Metre (kg/m) = Area (cm²) × 0.785   [for MS Steel, 7.85 g/cm³]
Weight per Metre (kg/m) = Area (mm²) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1000
Weight per Piece (kg) = kg/m × Length (m)
Total Weight (kg) = Weight per Piece × Quantity
d = overall depth  |  b = flange width  |  tw = web thickness  |  tf = flange thickness  |  all in mm
STEP 1 — Area

Cross-Section Decomposition

A C-section is treated as one vertical web rectangle plus two horizontal flange rectangles. Web height = d − 2×tf (to avoid double-counting corners). Area = web area + 2 × flange area.

STEP 2 — kg/m

Area × Density Shortcut

Converting Area (mm²) to cm² and multiplying by 0.785 gives kg/m for steel in one step. This works because 1 cm² cross-section × 1 m length × 7.85 g/cm³ = 0.785 kg. The same formula applies for any density — just replace 0.785 with (density ÷ 10).

EXAMPLE

ISMC 150 Worked Example

d=150, b=75, tw=5.7, tf=9.0 mm
Web = (150−18)×5.7 = 132×5.7 = 752.4 mm²
Flanges = 2×(75×9) = 1350 mm²
Area = 752.4+1350 = 2102.4 mm² = 21.02 cm²
kg/m = 21.02×0.785 = 16.50 kg/m ✓ (IS 808 = 16.8 kg/m incl. root radius)

NOTE

Root Radius Effect

IS 808 published kg/m values are slightly higher than the simple rectangle formula because they include fillet/root radius material at web–flange junctions. The difference is 1–4%. For preliminary estimation this calculator's rectangular formula is accurate; for precise structural design use IS 808 tabulated values directly.

ISMC Channel Uses in Indian Construction

Where C-sections and ISMC channels are specified and used across India's construction and manufacturing sectors

Industrial Shed Purlins

ISMC 100 to ISMC 150 are the most widely used purlin sections for pre-engineered building (PEB) roof and wall girts across India's industrial parks, warehouses and logistics hubs. Specified per IS 800:2007 design code.

Mezzanine & Platform Floors

ISMC 125 to ISMC 200 form primary and secondary beams for industrial mezzanine floors in factories, warehouses and commercial buildings — supporting machinery, storage racks and operational loads across India.

Cable Trays & Supports

ISMC 75 and ISMC 100 are standard supports for electrical cable tray systems in Indian power plants, refineries and large factories. Their open C-profile is ideal for bolting tray brackets without drilling flanges.

Railway & Infrastructure

Indian Railways specifies ISMC sections for station platform frames, overhead equipment supports, signal gantries and bridge walkways. SAIL, Tata Steel and JSW Steel supply IS 808 certified ISMC for railway contracts.

Door & Window Frames

Lightweight ISMC 75 and ISMC 100 are used as structural frames for heavy-duty industrial doors, roller shutter boxes, and window surrounds in Indian factories and commercial buildings where standard hollow sections are insufficient.

Machine Bases & Fabrications

Back-to-back ISMC channels (welded or bolted) form fabricated beams and machine bases — a common practice in Indian machinery and heavy equipment manufacturing as a cost-effective alternative to universal beams (ISMB).

Pro Tips – ISMC Channel Selection & Procurement in India

Practical guidance from Indian structural engineers and steel procurement professionals

Back-to-Back Channels vs ISMB

Two ISMC 200 back-to-back (44.2 kg/m combined) can substitute for ISMB 200 (25.4 kg/m) where box section stiffness is needed, but at higher material cost. Use single ISMB where bending governs — use box ISMC where torsion is critical (e.g., monorail beams, crane girders under eccentric loads).

Standard Mill Lengths

ISMC is supplied in 6 m and 12 m lengths from Indian mills (SAIL, Tata Steel, JSW). Specify 12 m bars where cutting waste is acceptable — 12 m bars are typically 1–2% cheaper per kg due to lower handling cost. Order off-cut friendly lengths (3 m, 4 m, 6 m) to minimise scrap.

Always Demand IS 808 + IS 2062 MTC

Structural ISMC must be certified to both IS 808 (dimensional standard) and IS 2062 Grade E250 (material standard). Reject any structural channel supplied without a dual-certified mill test certificate — particularly for government, railway, and defence contracts where third-party inspection is mandatory.

Weigh-Check on Receipt

Bundle weigh incoming ISMC consignments and divide by total length to get actual kg/m. Compare with IS 808 published value — tolerance per IS 808 is ±2.5% on weight per metre. Consistent under-weight supply (light gauge) indicates sub-standard material. Reject and raise an NCR if difference exceeds 2.5%.

Surface Treatment Before Installation

ISMC is supplied in black (as-rolled) condition. Apply 1 coat of red-oxide primer (IS 102) immediately after receipt and before storing outdoors. In coastal zones, use epoxy primer + two-pack polyurethane topcoat. For hot-dip galvanised ISMC (HDG), add ₹18–22/kg for galvanising to your procurement budget.

CPWD-DSR Rate for ISMC

Government project BOQs typically use CPWD-DSR 2023 rates for ISMC channels, which are based on IS 2062 / IS 808 certified material. When estimating at tender stage, check CPWD DSR Chapter 11 (Steel Works) for current approved rates in your state. Add 18% GST (HSN 7216) on material and contractor's overhead on labour.

Frequently Asked Questions – ISMC Channel Weight

Common questions from Indian structural engineers, contractors and steel procurement teams

What is the weight per metre of ISMC 150?
ISMC 150 weighs 16.80 kg/m per IS 808:1989. Its dimensions are: Depth = 150 mm, Flange width = 75 mm, Web thickness = 5.7 mm, Flange thickness = 9.0 mm, Cross-section area = 21.30 cm². A standard 6 m bar of ISMC 150 weighs 16.80 × 6 = 100.8 kg. A 12 m bar weighs 201.6 kg. At ₹60/kg (April 2026), a 6 m bar costs approximately ₹6,048 plus GST.
What is the formula to calculate ISMC channel weight?
The formula for channel (C-section) weight:
1. Cross-Section Area (mm²) = (d − 2×tf) × tw + 2 × (b × tf)
2. Weight per Metre (kg/m) = Area (mm²) × 7.85 ÷ 1000 (for MS steel at 7.85 g/cm³)
3. Weight per Piece (kg) = kg/m × Length (m)

Note: IS 808 published values are slightly higher (1–4%) than this formula because they include root radius fillet material. For preliminary estimates this formula is accurate; for structural design use IS 808 tabulated values.
What is the difference between ISMC and ISSC?
Both are Indian Standard C-channels from IS 808 but with different flange-to-depth proportions:
  • ISMC (Medium Weight Channel) — Most commonly used. Flanges are medium-width relative to depth. Available from 75 mm to 400 mm depth. Used for purlins, secondary beams, machine frames, cable trays.
  • ISSC (Special Channel) — Heavier flanges and web for the same depth. Less commonly stocked — typically special-order from mills. Used where higher flange rigidity is needed (e.g., back-to-back crane rail support beams).
For standard Indian construction and procurement, ISMC is the default specification unless a structural engineer specifically calls for ISSC.
What is the standard length of ISMC channel in India?
ISMC channel is supplied by Indian mills in two standard lengths:
  • 6 metres (6 m) — Standard length for most construction and fabrication use. Easy to transport by truck without special permits.
  • 12 metres (12 m) — Available from major mills (SAIL, Tata Steel, JSW). Used in long-span purlins and structural beams to minimise splice joints. Requires longer truck bed (flatbed or trailer).
  • Cut-to-size — Available from steel service centres in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad at a cutting charge of ₹1–3/cut.
IS 808 permits a length tolerance of +100 mm / −0 mm for standard lengths.
Which IS standard governs ISMC channel in India?
ISMC channels in India are governed by two IS standards:
  • IS 808:1989 (Reaffirmed 2021) — Dimensions for Hot-Rolled Steel Beam, Column, Channel and Angle Sections. Specifies exact depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, and theoretical weight per metre for all ISMC sizes from 75 to 400.
  • IS 2062:2011 — Hot Rolled Medium and High Tensile Structural Steel. Governs the material grade (E250, E350) — tensile strength, yield strength, chemical composition, charpy impact. Grade E250 is standard; E350 for higher-strength applications.
Both standards are available from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Government and defence procurement mandates BIS-licensed supply with dual IS 808 + IS 2062 certification.
What is the price of ISMC channel in India in 2026?
Approximate ISMC channel prices in India (April 2026):
  • ISMC 75–150 — ₹58–65/kg ex-Mumbai/Delhi/Hyderabad
  • ISMC 175–250 — ₹57–63/kg (better availability = marginally lower rate)
  • ISMC 300–400 — ₹60–68/kg (larger sections have lower stock turnover — price slightly higher)
  • Hot-Dip Galvanised (HDG) ISMC — add ₹18–22/kg to above base price
All prices are ex-warehouse, exclusive of GST (18%, HSN 7216) and freight. Prices track LME steel billet and Indian domestic HRC/merchant bar market. Always get 3 quotations from BIS-licensed distributors.
Can I use ISMC as a purlin for roofing?
Yes — ISMC is one of the most common purlin sections used in Indian industrial and commercial roofing. Design guidance:
  • ISMC 100 — Purlin spans up to 4.5 m, light roof loads (GI sheet ≤ 0.55 mm)
  • ISMC 125 — Spans up to 5.5 m, standard industrial roofing
  • ISMC 150 — Spans up to 6.5 m, heavy roofing or high wind/snow loads
  • ISMC 175 / 200 — Long span purlins and girts in PEB structures
Always verify purlin size with a structural engineer per IS 800:2007 — span, spacing, roof sheet weight, wind pressure (IS 875 Part 3), and live load all affect the required section size.
What is the weight tolerance for ISMC per IS 808?
IS 808:1989 specifies the following tolerances for ISMC channels:
  • Weight per metre — ±2.5% of theoretical mass
  • Depth (d) — ±2.0 mm for sections up to 200 mm; ±3.0 mm for larger
  • Flange width (b) — ±2.0 mm
  • Web thickness (tw) — +unlimited / −0.5 mm
  • Flange thickness (tf) — +unlimited / −0.5 mm
  • Length — +100 mm / 0 mm for fixed lengths
When conducting incoming inspection, weigh-check the batch using total bundle weight ÷ total length and compare with IS 808 kg/m ± 2.5%.
