* Gauge 18 (1.214 mm) and Gauge 16 (1.519 mm) are the most widely stocked CR sheet sizes in India. IS 513 CR Sheet tolerances: ±0.04–0.10 mm for thickness up to 3.15 mm. Higher gauge = thinner sheet.

GI / Galvanized Sheet uses the US Standard Gauge (USG) system but GI gauges are slightly thicker than MS at the same gauge number — the zinc coating (Z275 = ~0.038 mm total both sides) adds to base metal thickness. Standard: IS 277:2018.

Stainless Steel uses the US Standard Gauge (USG) system but SS gauge thicknesses are different from carbon steel at the same gauge number. Standard: IS 6528, AISI 304/316. Common range: Gauge 7 to Gauge 30.

* SS Gauge 18 (1.270 mm) and Gauge 16 (1.588 mm) are the most commonly stocked stainless steel sheet thicknesses in India. Note: SS is thicker than MS at the same gauge number in most cases. Never use the MS gauge chart for SS procurement — always verify from the SS-specific table.

Aluminium uses the Brown & Sharp (B&S) gauge system — completely different from USG steel. The same gauge number gives a different (thinner) thickness than MS or SS. Common alloys: 1100, 3003, 5052, 6061. Standard: IS 737.

* Aluminium B&S Gauge 16 (1.290 mm) is the most widely stocked sheet thickness in India from Hindalco, Nalco, and importer stockists. Important: Al Gauge 18 B&S = 1.024 mm — very different from MS Gauge 18 USG = 1.214 mm. Never cross-use gauge tables between steel and aluminium.

Copper and Brass both use the Brown & Sharp (B&S) gauge system — same gauge numbers as Aluminium B&S. Thickness values are identical to Al B&S gauge. Common grades: ETP Copper (C11000), Brass CW508L (65:35).

* Copper and Brass use identical B&S gauge thickness values. Copper B&S Gauge 16 (1.290 mm) is widely used for electrical bus bars and roofing copper in India. Brass B&S Gauge 16 (1.290 mm) is the most stocked decorative brass sheet. Source: B&S (Brown & Sharp) gauge standard.

All metals side-by-side — same gauge number, different thicknesses across gauge systems (USG for steel, B&S for non-ferrous). Use this to understand why Gauge 18 in MS ≠ Gauge 18 in Aluminium.

* Highlighted rows (Gauge 14 and 18) are the most commonly referenced gauges in Indian fabrication. Key insight: Gauge 18 MS = 1.214 mm but Gauge 18 Aluminium (B&S) = 1.024 mm — a 0.190 mm difference. GI is always thicker than MS at the same gauge due to zinc coating. Never use the MS chart for aluminium, copper, or brass procurement.

Gauge Systems Used in India

The two main gauge standards used for sheet metal in India and the metals each applies to

US Standard Gauge (USG)
Steel
MS / GI / SS
Used for all steel sheets in India — MS (IS 513), GI (IS 277), and Stainless Steel (IS 6528). Higher gauge = thinner sheet. Gauge 3 is ~6 mm; Gauge 30 is ~0.3 mm. Not to be used for aluminium or non-ferrous metals.
Brown & Sharp (B&S)
Non-Ferrous
Al / Cu / Brass
Also called the American Wire Gauge (AWG) for wire. Used for aluminium, copper, and brass sheets in India. Same gauge number gives thinner sheets than USG steel. B&S Gauge 18 = 1.024 mm vs USG Gauge 18 = 1.214 mm.
BWG (Birmingham Wire Gauge)
Tubes / Wire
Pipe & Tube Wall
Used in India for some pipe and tube wall thicknesses — especially for boiler tubes and instrument tubing. Not commonly used for flat sheet. Rarely encountered in structural Indian fabrication.
SWG (Standard Wire Gauge)
Wire / Old UK
British Standard
Old British gauge system still occasionally referenced in Indian drawing offices inherited from colonial-era projects. SWG values are different from USG and B&S. Rarely used in modern Indian IS-based fabrication — verify if a drawing says "SWG" or "gauge".
IS Standard (mm)
Direct mm
Modern IS Practice
Modern Indian IS standards (IS 513, IS 277, IS 737, IS 6528) specify thickness directly in mm — not in gauge numbers. Most Indian engineering drawings, purchase orders, and BOMs should specify thickness in mm. Gauge numbers are used informally in site and market discussions.
Gauge Wheel (Physical)
Site Tool
Ferrous / Non-Ferrous
A slotted metal wheel used to measure gauge on site in India. Two types: Ferrous (for MS/GI/SS — USG) and Non-Ferrous (for Al/Cu/Brass — B&S). Using the wrong wheel gives a wrong gauge number. Accuracy: ±0.5 gauge. Use a digital caliper for precision.

Gauge Conversion Notes & Rules

Important rules for correctly converting gauge numbers to mm in India — common mistakes and how to avoid them

Higher Gauge Number = THINNER Sheet  |  Lower Gauge Number = THICKER Sheet
USG Gauge 18 (MS) = 1.214 mm  ≠  B&S Gauge 18 (Aluminium) = 1.024 mm
GI Gauge = MS Gauge + Zinc Coating ≈ MS Gauge + 0.038 mm (for Z275)
SS Gauge 18 = 1.270 mm  ≠  MS Gauge 18 = 1.214 mm (SS is slightly thicker at same gauge)
Always specify metal type when referencing a gauge number — "Gauge 18" alone is meaningless without knowing the metal and gauge system
RULE 1
