Galvanized Steel Weight Calculation Formula — IS 277 Method

Exact step-by-step formula including zinc coating weight — valid for Z120 to Z600 grades

Step 1 — Sheet Area (m²) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) ÷ 1,000,000
Step 2 — Base Steel Weight (kg) = Area (m²) × Thickness (mm) × 7.85
Step 3 — Zinc Coating Weight (kg) = Area (m²) × Coating Class (g/m²) ÷ 1,000
Step 4 — Weight per Sheet (kg) = Base Steel Weight + Zinc Coating Weight
Step 5 — Total Weight (kg) = Weight per Sheet × Quantity
Steel density = 7.85 kg/m²/mm (IS 277)  |  Zinc density ≈ 7.13 g/cm³  |  Coating g/m² is total both-face weight per IS 277:2008
NOTE 1

Why 7.85 and Not 7.87?

Some quick-reference charts use 7.87 g/cm³ as an effective GI density that bundles a typical Z275 coating into the base number. This calculator separates them for full accuracy — so you get the exact zinc contribution for any coating class from Z120 to Z600.

NOTE 2

Coating g/m² is Both-Side Total

IS 277 specifies the coating class (e.g. Z275 = 275 g/m²) as the combined total weight on both faces. The formula uses this value directly without doubling. Minimum per-side coat is typically ≥195 g/m² for Z275.

NOTE 3

IS 277:2008 — India Standard

Bureau of Indian Standards IS 277:2008 specifies coating classes Z120 to Z600 for hot-dip galvanized steel sheets. Z275 is the dominant grade in India for residential and commercial roofing applications.

NOTE 4

India Quick Thumb Rule (2026)

For standard Z275 GI sheet: kg/m² ≈ Thickness (mm) × 7.85 + 0.275. Example — 0.50 mm Z275: 0.50 × 7.85 + 0.275 = 4.20 kg/m². Accurate to ±0.5% for all standard sheet sizes up to 3.00 mm.

✦ Worked Example — 8×4 ft GI Sheet, 26 Gauge (0.50 mm), Z275 Coating:
Sheet Size: 2438 mm × 1219 mm  |  Area = 2438 × 1219 ÷ 1,000,000 = 2.972 m²
Base Steel Weight = 2.972 × 0.50 × 7.85 = 11.66 kg
Zinc Coating Weight = 2.972 × 275 ÷ 1000 = 0.82 kg
Weight per Sheet = 11.66 + 0.82 = 12.48 kg  |  Weight per m² = 12.48 ÷ 2.972 = 4.20 kg/m²

Where Galvanized Steel Weight Calculation Is Used in India

Industries and project types that depend on accurate GI sheet weight data — 2026

Roofing & Construction

GI sheets are the most widely used roofing material in India. Accurate weight calculation is needed for purlin design, rafter sizing and dead load input to structural analysis per IS 875.

Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEB)

PEB manufacturers specify GI cladding and decking by weight per m². Procurement teams use weight calculations to raise purchase orders and estimate transport loads per truck, complying with MoRTH axle load rules.

HVAC Ductwork Fabrication

GI ductwork is fabricated from plain sheets and quoted by weight (₹/kg). Mechanical contractors calculate GI sheet weight to estimate fabrication cost and total duct system weight for hanger and bracket design.

Industrial Enclosures

Electrical panels, MCC cubicles, cable trays and junction boxes are fabricated from GI sheets. Design engineers calculate sheet weight to verify enclosure structural integrity and confirm seismic restraint requirements.

Logistics & Supply Chain

GI sheets are bundled on trucks across India. Per-bundle weight is required to comply with NHAI axle load regulations and calculate freight cost per tonne for cross-state shipments.

Procurement & Tendering

Steel stockists, contractors and OEMs quote GI sheets by weight (₹/kg) and by sheet count. Accurate weight calculation aligns quantity-based BOQ orders with weight-based billing under GCC contract terms.

Pro Tips for Accurate GI Sheet Weight Calculation — India 2026

Common errors to avoid and best practices for site engineers and procurement teams

Gauge ≠ Same Thickness in All Standards

Indian SWG and US BWG give different mm values for the same gauge number. Always confirm which standard your supplier uses and verify the actual mm thickness on the mill test certificate before any structural calculation.

Never Ignore Zinc Coating Weight

For thin sheets (0.25–0.50 mm), zinc coating adds 5–12% above base steel weight. On large roof orders this difference is significant for both freight cost and structural dead load. Always separate base and coating weights using the calculator above.

Add 5–8% Cutting Wastage

Roofing and cladding jobs typically waste 5–8% of GI sheet area due to overlaps, ridge cuts and edge trims. Add this when calculating total sheet requirement to avoid material shortage on site.

Coastal Areas Need Z350 or Higher

IS 277 and BIS guidelines recommend Z350 or above for sites within 5 km of the coast or in industrial pollution zones. Using Z275 in coastal India (Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Goa, Vizag) significantly shortens service life.

Verify Against the Mill Certificate

Cross-check calculated weight against the weight on the supplier's mill test certificate or packing list. Discrepancies over 2% should be investigated before accepting the delivery. Refer to TATA Steel mill cert guide for a sample.

Buying by Sheet Count vs by Weight

Indian suppliers sell GI sheets both by sheet count and by kg (₹/kg). Calculate expected total weight first — it protects you against under-gauge material where thickness is below the IS 277 tolerance band (typically −0.05 mm for thinner gauges).

Frequently Asked Questions — Galvanized Steel Weight Calculation India 2026

Common questions from site engineers, contractors and procurement teams in India

A standard 8×4 ft (2438×1219 mm) GI sheet weight in India depends on thickness and coating class. For the most popular size — 26 gauge (0.50 mm) with Z275 coating — the weight is approximately 12.47 kg per sheet. For 24 gauge (0.63 mm) it is approximately 15.51 kg and for 22 gauge (0.80 mm) approximately 19.48 kg. Use the GI sheet weight calculator above for any gauge or coating class.
The IS 277 formula is: Weight (kg) = L(m) × W(m) × T(mm) × 7.85 + [Area(m²) × Coating g/m² ÷ 1000]. Quick thumb rule for Z275: kg/m² ≈ Thickness(mm) × 7.85 + 0.275. Many Indian references use an effective density of 7.87 g/cm³ which approximates a typical Z275 coating contribution but is inaccurate for Z120 or Z450 classes.
Z275 is a zinc coating class per IS 277:2008 (BIS) and EN 10346, specifying a minimum total zinc coating of 275 g/m² on both sides combined (minimum 195 g/m² on any single side). It is the most widely used coating class for roofing and general construction in India. The "Z" designates zinc and the number is the minimum total coat weight in grams per square metre.
GI sheet weight per m² (Z275 coating, IS 277 2026) for common gauges: 0.50 mm = 4.20 kg/m², 0.63 mm = 5.22 kg/m², 0.80 mm = 6.56 kg/m², 1.00 mm = 8.13 kg/m². These are total weights including zinc coating and should be used directly as dead load input for IS 875 structural design calculations.
GI sheet prices in India in 2026 are approximately ₹75–₹95 per kg for Z275 grade from major producers like TATA Steel, JSW Steel and SAIL. Prices vary by thickness, coating class, location and quantity. Always get current stockist quotes as steel prices are linked to global HRC and zinc commodity prices. See SteelOnTheNet for live HRC benchmarks.
GI (hot-dip galvanized) sheets are coated with pure zinc (density 7.13 g/cm³). Galvalume sheets are coated with an aluminium-zinc-silicon alloy (55% Al, 43.5% Zn, 1.5% Si) with a coating density of approximately 3.90 g/cm³. A Galvalume sheet weighs slightly less than an equivalent GI sheet with identical base thickness and coating thickness (in μm), because the alloy coating is significantly less dense than pure zinc. Galvalume also provides superior heat reflectance and corrosion resistance in many Indian environments.
For buildings within 5 km of the coast — including Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Goa, Vizag and Mangalore — specify Z350 minimum, and Z450 or Z600 for critical or long-life structures. IS 277 and corrosion mapping studies published by BARC and the National Building Code of India classify coastal environments as C4–C5 corrosivity, where Z275 has a significantly reduced service life.
