Steel Sheet Weight Formula – How It Is Calculated

Exact step-by-step method for rectangular and circular sheet weight calculation

Rectangular Sheet Weight (kg) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000
Circular Sheet Weight (kg) = π ÷ 4 × Diameter² (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000
Weight per m² (kg/m²) = Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³)
Total Weight (kg) = Weight per Sheet × Quantity  |  MT = Total kg ÷ 1000
π ≈ 3.14159  |  Dividing by 1,000,000 converts mm³ to cm³ (density unit) then g to kg in a single step
KEY FORMULA

kg/m² Thumb Rule

For any material: kg/m² = Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³). For MS sheets (7.85): 1 mm thick = 7.85 kg/m². So 2 mm MS sheet = 15.70 kg/m², 3 mm = 23.55 kg/m². This rule is used by every Indian steel stockist for quick quotes.

UNIT CONVERSION

Why ÷ 1,000,000?

Length × Width × Thickness in mm gives volume in mm³. One cm³ = 1000 mm³. Density is in g/cm³. So mm³ ÷ 1000 = cm³, then × g/cm³ = grams, then ÷ 1000 = kg. Combined: mm³ × density ÷ 1,000,000 = kg directly.

GI SHEET NOTE

Zinc Coating Adds Weight

GI (Galvanised Iron) sheets have a zinc coating of 120–275 g/m² (IS 277 coating classes Z120 to Z275). The calculator uses base metal density 7.85 — add approximately 0.12–0.28 kg/m² separately for the zinc coating weight in precision applications.

WORKED EXAMPLE

MS Sheet 2500×1250×1.6 mm, IS 513, Qty 50

Weight/sheet = 2500 × 1250 × 1.6 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000
= 5,000,000,000 × 1.6 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000
= 5,000,000 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000 × 1.6
= 39.25 kg/sheet
Total = 39.25 × 50 = 1,962.5 kg = 1.963 MT

Quick Indian Market Reference — MS Sheet kg/m² by Thickness:
0.5mm = 3.93  |  0.6mm = 4.71  |  0.8mm = 6.28  |  1.0mm = 7.85  |  1.2mm = 9.42  |  1.6mm = 12.56  |  2.0mm = 15.70  |  2.5mm = 19.63  |  3.0mm = 23.55  |  4.0mm = 31.40  |  5.0mm = 39.25  |  6.0mm = 47.10 kg/m²

Steel Sheet Applications in Indian Industry

Key sectors where MS, GI, SS and aluminium sheets are used across India

Automotive Industry

Cold rolled IS 513 sheets are the primary body panel material for passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles. Maruti, Tata Motors, Mahindra and Hyundai consume millions of tonnes of IS 513 CR2/CR4 sheets annually from JSW, SAIL and AMNS India.

Roofing & Cladding

GI corrugated sheets (IS 277) are the most common low-cost roofing material across rural and industrial India. Pre-painted GI (PPGI) sheets from Tata BlueScope and JSW cover industrial sheds, warehouses and rural housing nationwide.

Kitchen & Food Equipment

SS 304 and SS 202 sheets are fabricated into commercial kitchen equipment, food processing vessels, dairy tanks and pharmaceutical storage. India's FSSAI regulations mandate stainless steel contact surfaces for food production equipment.

HVAC & Ducting

GI sheets (22G to 18G, IS 277) are the standard material for air conditioning ductwork across Indian commercial buildings, hospitals, IT parks and metro stations. Sheet weight calculation determines material cost and duct hanger capacity.

Solar & Electrical

Aluminium sheets form the back sheet and junction box covers of solar panels. CR steel sheets are pressed into electrical panel enclosures, distribution boards and switchgear cabinets widely used across India's growing power infrastructure.

Shipbuilding & Defence

HR plates and sheets from IS 2062 are used in Indian Navy and Coast Guard vessel construction at Mazagon Dock and Cochin Shipyard. SS 316 sheets are used in marine-grade applications requiring high corrosion resistance in saline environments.

Pro Tips for Steel Sheet Weight Calculation – India

Best practices used by Indian sheet metal fabricators, procurement teams and QS engineers

Add 3–5% for Cutting & Nesting Losses

Sheet metal cutting (shearing, laser, plasma, waterjet) always produces off-cuts. For simple rectangular blanks from standard sheets, add 5%. For complex nested profiles, add 8–15% depending on blank shape efficiency. Use the nesting layout to minimise waste before ordering. Indian fabricators typically add 7% to calculated net weight for procurement.

IS 513 Thickness Tolerance

IS 513:2008 allows a thickness tolerance of −0.04 to +0.10 mm for sheets under 1.6 mm. For 1.6–2.5 mm, tolerance is −5% to +8%. Actual sheet weight may be up to 5% lower than nominal due to under-thickness rolling. For precision weight requirements, always order with tight tolerance specification or verify with calliper measurement at goods receipt.

CR vs HR Sheet — Weight is Identical

Cold Rolled (IS 513) and Hot Rolled (IS 1079) sheets have the same density (7.85 g/cm³) — they weigh the same per mm thickness. The difference is surface finish, mechanical properties and dimensional tolerance. CR sheets are thinner, more dimensionally accurate and have better surface finish than HR sheets of the same nominal thickness.

Use Area Output for Paint Estimation

The Total Area result from this calculator gives the surface area in m² for both sides combined (multiply by 2 for two-sided painting). At 12–14 m² per litre for standard zinc phosphate primer, divide total area by coverage rate to get paint quantity. For powder coating, area determines cost at approximately ₹40–80 per m² at Indian job shops in 2026.

Indian Sheet Price Reference 2026

As of 2026 approximate ex-Mumbai prices: IS 513 CR sheet ₹62,000–₹72,000/MT; IS 277 GI sheet ₹75,000–₹88,000/MT; SS 304 2B sheet ₹2,00,000–₹2,30,000/MT; SS 202 ₹1,20,000–₹1,45,000/MT; Aluminium 5052 ₹2,10,000–₹2,40,000/MT. Prices change weekly — always get fresh quotes from your local stockist or JSW/SAIL dealer.

Verify with Mill Test Certificate

For automotive, pharma, food and defence applications, always request the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) showing chemical composition, mechanical properties, coating weight (for GI) and actual thickness measurement. IS 513, IS 277 and IS 6911 all mandate MTC documentation for BIS-certified material — mandatory for government, IATF and FSSC 22000 compliant supply chains.

Frequently Asked Questions – Steel Sheet Weight Calculator India

Common questions from Indian fabricators, procurement engineers and sheet metal workers answered

What is the weight of a 2500×1250×1.6 mm MS sheet in India?
A 2500×1250×1.6 mm IS 513 cold rolled MS sheet weighs 39.25 kg. Calculation: 2500 × 1250 × 1.6 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000 = 39.25 kg. At kg/m² level: 1.6 mm × 7.85 = 12.56 kg/m² × (2.5 × 1.25 m²) = 12.56 × 3.125 = 39.25 kg. This is the most common sheet size in Indian stockists — use the calculator above for any other size or thickness.
What is the difference between IS 513 and IS 1079 sheets?
IS 513:2008 covers Cold Rolled (CR) sheets — produced by cold rolling after hot rolling, giving tighter dimensional tolerances, better surface finish and improved mechanical properties. Used for auto bodies, appliances and precision components. Grades: CR1 (commercial), CR2 (drawing), CR3 (deep drawing), CR4 (extra deep drawing), CR5 (special killed).

IS 1079:1994 covers Hot Rolled (HR) sheets — produced directly by hot rolling, with thicker tolerances and rougher surface. Used for structural fabrication, general engineering and as base material for GI sheets. Both have density 7.85 g/cm³ — weight calculation is identical.
How do I convert sheet gauge to mm in India?
India primarily uses SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) for sheet metal. Common conversions used in Indian industry: 8G=4.064mm, 10G=3.251mm, 12G=2.642mm, 14G=2.032mm, 16G=1.626mm, 18G=1.219mm, 20G=0.914mm, 22G=0.711mm, 24G=0.559mm. Use the built-in Gauge → mm Converter strip at the top of this calculator — select SWG, choose your gauge number, click "Use This Thickness" and the value fills in automatically. See also our full Gauge to mm Converter.
What standard sizes of MS sheets are available in India in 2026?
Standard MS sheet sizes available from Indian stockists and mills in 2026: 2500×1250 mm (most common), 2000×1000 mm, 3000×1500 mm, 3650×1500 mm (4×5 feet equivalent) and 6000×1500 mm for large structural use. Thickness range for CR sheets (IS 513): 0.40 mm to 3.15 mm. For HR sheets (IS 1079): 1.6 mm to 6 mm (above 6 mm classified as plates under IS 2062). SAIL, JSW Steel, AMNS India (formerly Essar) and Tata Steel are major Indian producers.
Why does SS 316 sheet weigh more than SS 304 of the same thickness?
SS 316 has a density of 7.98 g/cm³ compared to SS 304 at 7.93 g/cm³. The difference is due to SS 316's addition of 2–3% molybdenum (Mo) which is heavier than the chromium/nickel it partially replaces. For a 1 mm thick, 2500×1250 mm sheet: SS 304 = 24.78 kg vs SS 316 = 24.94 kg — a difference of 0.16 kg per sheet (0.6%). On large SS 316 projects above 50 MT, this density difference becomes significant for freight and cost calculations.
How do I calculate MS sheet weight in kg using a simple formula?
The simplest Indian thumb rule for MS sheet weight: Weight (kg) = L (m) × W (m) × T (mm) × 7.85. Example: 2.5m × 1.25m × 2mm × 7.85 = 49.06 kg. For kg/m²: simply multiply thickness in mm by 7.85. This works for all MS, HR and GI base metal sheets. For SS 304, replace 7.85 with 7.93. For aluminium, use 2.70. The calculator above handles all materials and both rectangular and circular shapes automatically.
